Wounded Bear, what do you think caused it?

Recommended Posts

So I was out hiking in a drainage the other day with my husband and two dogs when I looked across and saw a bear on the other side. It was looking right at us and only maybe 70 yards across from us. Although it appeared to be looking at us, it didn't run. After getting the dogs on the leash, I waved my arms and called out to the bear to make sure he noticed us. He still didn't move away. Finally I noticed that when he tried to turn to leave he couldn't put any weight on his front left leg. And then I realized he also couldn't put any weight on his back right leg. So he was unable to move more than like 6 inches. It was obvious that he would like to leave but he just couldn't. I put up my binos and looked for injuries but couldn't see any blood or cuts or bones sticking out or anything. So I have no idea what happened to the bear. He appeared in good condition and my feeling was that the injury was very recent since he hadn't adapted to it yet. Did he get in a fight with another bear? Did he fall out of a tree? Did he get caught in a leghold trap? Did he flip a boulder looking for food and it fell on him? I really don't know. You guys have any ideas?

It was getting dark so the only pics I got were blurry...

Isn't it mating season right now? Maybe a fight over breeding rights with a more dominate bear? Hit by a car??? Sad, hope he learns to compensate.

Probably got in a fight with Lark. Now it can't move cause it has a belly ache from eating too much grease.
