Gringo Report post Posted June 21, 2010 With Tags being as hard to get as they are... Was considering buying one of WMAT, DIY Archery tags. Anyone have any experience here? Is it worth it? I know it's not a trophy tag, but would be a good way to get out and chase some Elk with my bow. Thanks for the feedback.
el diablo Report post Posted June 21, 2010 It's a tough hunt. You get the burn area just south of the rim. You can't scout except like 2 days before your hunt and you have to pay for a permit for the 2 days so it makes it a little tougher. To answer your question, is it worth it, absolutely. Any chance to get out and chase some elk. It's not all that expensive either.

hunterdude Report post Posted June 22, 2010 You can't scout ! But you can go "squirell hunting"/ scouting if you buy a permit. Just carry a .22 rifle with you and look for elk!

Have to agree on the squirrel hunting ... I have assisted on several cow hunts on the res and a group of friends have gone 3 for 4 both times the last 2 years on these Rag Horn hunts.... Truth be told though you don't have to do a ton of scouting but I would suggest Traveling the roads and mapping them well with your GPS since there are no worth while maps for most of the Res, and if you do pick up your tags shoot me a PM I can hit you with a few suggestions of where to start . I believe that area is closed any other time. Even if you have a small game permit or fishing permit or whatever. Best to check with them because I can assure you you don't want to get busted on the res
Gringo Report post Posted June 22, 2010 I appreciate the feedback. Figured it would be decent, and since I'm not looking for Trophies, shouldn't be too hard to find some elk to work, even if it's just a couple of days before the hunt opens. Gracias!! Those units wouldn't be closed if you got a small game permit. It's the west end units 9 & 11 that are closed where the burn area is.

kaibabkiller Report post Posted June 24, 2010 I drew a cow/calf/spike tag there last year. Saw more rag horns than cows. That said it only took 1/2 hour to fill my tag.
