Lion spotted in Gilbert???

Recommended Posts

Talking with my brother over in Trilogy said the cops where out looking for a good size lion spotted traveling down the wash by the golf coures. Said there was a news letter sent out to the home owners near the sighting giving caution. Anybody else here of anything?

Update:

Three Gilbert residents have reported seeing a mountain lion four times in a local neighborhood since the end of May.

The sightings began early May 31 in Gilbert's Trilogy Community, when the mountain lion was reportedly found in a backyard near Queen Creek and Recker Roads, according to a statement from Gilbert police.

Another sighting was reported on June 3, when a resident told officials the animal was walking through the neighborhood near where it was last seen.

The final two reports came Monday, when the mountain lion was apparently seen in a backyard near 4600 E. Blue Spruce, then later running toward a green belt across from the backyard, the statement said.

Gilbert police have not received any reports of aggression from the animal. Officials have responded to the calls, but have not yet found the mountain lion. Anyone who sees it in a populated area is being asked to call 911.

I'm in Sossoman Estates (right across the street) and while I haven't received any notices regarding this, I can confirm that the coyote population in the area is larger now than anytime in the 7 years I've lived there. I typically see 2-3 a month in the AM while leaving for work.???

Hey ... this is a NO shoot deal ... Higley School District just issued a bulleton on this stating the lion has been seen 4 times, most recently 3 days ago. Didn't say the size of the cat, but that it had been spotted in the morning twice, evening once, and mid-day once. Twice in peoples yards. Says it is "not showing aggression toward people or animals", but that is just a matter of time, isn't it? Why would the cat be hanging around that area otherwise???

There is a golf course at power and Queen Creek with lots of water, rabbits and little lap dogs. Queen Creek wash flows right through there too.

I drove by yesterday evening and must of seen about 100-200 cottontails running around on the golf course! If anyone has seen the size of the wash and golf course would understand its a prime area, not to mention the water, dogs and cats!!!! Easy meal!

I live over by the multi-generational facility off of Adobe between Power and 80th St in Mesa and probably see 3-5 coyotes a week around 0430 going to the gym. Last week I had 5 together one morning crossing the street heading to our subdivision so it is indeed getting worse.

Yeah ... lots of small meals I guess ... that is true. Someone at Game and Fish said that it's likely a young cat possibly trying to establish territory, and I guess it is doing what they want it to do ... move away from people when it knows it's been seen. The gal said most cats like that end up moving off on their own. Never really thought of it, but with how close we are to the Reservation and a lot of open territory, it makes some sense that we could see a lion ... first one I've heard of in 6 years in this area, but stranger things have happened.

I worry a bit about the neighborhood across Power ... lots of younger families with small kids ... probably most of them have no idea what to do if they come face to face with a cat. Just call me a "Worry Wart" I guess.

I live in Power Ranch directly to the South of Trilogy and have made a concerted effort to drive around the area looking for tracks. Have found nothing noteworthy. Can't dismiss the many people who have seen it. Regardless you cant shoot it and expect to keep it.
