azelkhunter2 Report post Posted May 19, 2010 This all started a few weeks ago after a long day at the range...The rifle I use for elk right now is a Lazzeroni 7.82 warbird that was built by Dave tooley several yrs ago..It has a little over 600 rds down the barrel and the barrel is toast!!....( Did a bore scope... not good )..So I have a plan... Put the warbird in the back of the safe and pull out a 300 um sendero that has been in there since I bought the warbird...(Now the plan)...Take the 300um and turn it into a 338 Edge...It already has a Stockys laminated thumb-hole long range stock, Replace the barrel with a 30'' Lilja with a brake, work the action, Jewell trigger, and top it off with a Night-force 12 x 42 x 56 scope on a rail mount....So thoughts / opinions..Twist rate...barrel...the 338 edge...any help would be great...Thanks Dave

azslim Report post Posted May 20, 2010 Not familiar with the Edge, faster/slower than .338lapua? For pretty much anything in North America I lean towards the .30-378wby. Speed or power depending on the bullet weight and it won't dislocate a shoulder. Don't own one but if a slot opens up in my safe that would be the next caliber that would go in it. I've shot the one put out by The Outdoorsman and really like that gun.
youngbuck Report post Posted May 20, 2010 Only think I would change is the lam to syn because I can beat the tar outa my hunting rifles at times,(my stock hangs outa my scabard). I would never be able to use a 42x scope, 20x is plenty for most stuff for me even stuff the edga can tackle. Id go 5.5-22, but thats me.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted May 20, 2010 I would think that you would want to rebarrel the Lazz also while you are making the Edge.
metau Report post Posted May 21, 2010 Check out LRH.com and search for 338 Edge or contact Shawn Carlock. There is more information from those two then you could possibly take in in a week. Personally, I'd go with either a 20 or 40 MOA inclined rail, oversized bolt handle, 1-10" twist for shooting the 300gr pills, Badger Ordanence rings, and a cosine indicator if you want to shoot the far stuff. Been a few years since I looked into a long range rig, so I'm sure there is newer and greater out there, but that's my thought. Or a 338 Allen Mag Jerry

308Nut Report post Posted May 22, 2010 I think you are on the right track moving from hot 30's to the 338. The barrel life is MUCH better and they hit much harder at any range but excell at very long range. Another major benefit with the 300 grain pills is that the wind drift is seriously reduced. The new Berger would only drift 43" at 1K in a full on 10 MPH wind where the 30-378 running 180 grain pills (even at a very optimistic 3600 FPS) will drift over 60" Still not bad but when it comes to windage, less is better. With modern lasers, trajectories meen absolutly nothing. Windage is what will make or break your success. The difference in energy between the 2 calibers is nearly 1000 foot pounds at 1K yards where as at the muzzle it is only about 200 pounds. Better bore life, more energy, less drift. It is a good choice. The down side is recoil.
