KRS Report post Posted May 19, 2010 I'm 6'7". I ordered a manfrotto pistol grip (8" tall) to use when the binos are on the tripod; I'll quick release the binos and put on the spotter (angled- but you already know that!). So, I'm thinking I need a 66" tall tripod. I don't think I should get one with a ball head, because the pistol grip will give me what I need (right?). I'm torn between what I just decribed: no pan head, just put the pistol grip on the head-less tripod, and quick release the top of the pistol grip. This will require that the tripod be lowered for the spotter to be used. Option # 2: Put a pan head (or ball head, I don't know) on the top of the tripod, then a quick release on top of that, then the pistol grip on top of that. Use binos on pistol grip. When I want to switch to spotter, quick release the entire pistol grip assembly from the pan head, and put the spotter on the pan head. The spotter will most likely be the perfect height with this setup. Thoughts? KRS
azslim Report post Posted May 19, 2010 KRS, you are just going to have to try a couple tripods to see what works best for you. I'm only 6'2" and have an issue with getting something tall enough for me to stand and use. There is a bird shop, has bird food because my daughter needed some for her Maccaw, down there in Sierra Vista that carries Vortex and other optics, they had a couple different types of tripods if I remember right. Anyway go hit it up and check things out. I think it was on the S side of the road heading into the main gate, shopping mall right there. And when I swap between bino's/spotter I leave the grip in place and things line up just fine.
elkhunter Report post Posted May 19, 2010 you might want to give Jim White a call, he designs tripod adaptor/tripod accessories and he'll know what you're talking about. You can find him through the coueswhitetail shop off the main webpage
TrentSwanson Report post Posted May 20, 2010 I just pulled out my Outdoorsmans Tall Tripod with Center Post Extension and Pan Head. When all parts are fully extended, the top of the Pan Head is 78.5". It's almost as tall as you! Of course it also compresses down to 24.5" and weighs just 4.5 lbs (with the Long Range Rear Rifle Support attached). Give the Outdoorsmans a call at 800-291-8065. They have a solution for you! youngbuck Report post Posted May 20, 2010 Bogen's largest carbon 3 piece will be plenty tall to stand up for you. My buddy is 6 3" and it will go way too high for him. If one is almost tall enough, you'll have to scoot the feet together and that make it unstable. I'd just do some research and find a model that will meet your needs, ask questions abou that specific model. With the guys on here we've tried out a LOT of heads and legs. Might want to concider a smaller sittinf set of legs in addition, that giant 3 piece works great but is dang long collapsed.

Red Rabbit Report post Posted May 20, 2010 This Velbon might not break the bank for a tall tripod. For the necessary height, you might have to sacrifice some lightweight chararcteristics to get the stiffness. http://www.adorama.com/Als/ProductPage/VNN....html#TechSpecs This Flashpoint should work with extending the center column a little http://www.adorama.com/Als/ProductPage/FPT....html#TechSpecs Jim White has a panning adapter yu might find useful for under the pistol grip http://www.coueswhitetail.com/bookstore/tr...ripod_heads.htm

Antlerdog Report post Posted May 24, 2010 KRS, I used about every tripod combo out there trying to get what I wanted! I bought an OUTDOORSMANS tripod several years ago , and put their pistol grip head head on it. I think that some day I may possibly update all of my swarovski glass, but as for my tripod. I LOVE IT!!!! not even a thought. A new tripod is the last thing on my mind. Quality / Durabilty / Precision is second to none! This equipment is not low prised, but I will tell you that you get what you pay for! I wasted alot of money trying to find what I wanted. (also sold alot of tripods) Good luck Jim

KCA205 Report post Posted May 27, 2010 I love my Outdoorsmans tri pod. I have the tall legs with the pan attachment and pistol grip. It is tall enough for most to stand behind and will go short so you can sit behind it as well. I also have the Jim White pan head for my spotting scope. It is light weight and packs very well and is very durable. I have not been able to break it yet. I have had others and all have failed. I have replaced 2 of the legs on my Bogen. If the tall version is not tall enough, they do have extensions for the vertically endowed.
