I was just out in NM and found that the areas south of reserve, nm were LOADED with Abert's squirrels! Most any ridge I went on had them. I plan to go back and hunt squirrels sometime.

Larry,

NM has lots of Abert's squirrels in good years. With all the moisture we've had this winter, I think it's going to be one of those years. Unit 17 and 13 has Abert's squirrels. Unit 34 does not. Only red or chicory squirrels. I agree with Amanda. The Gila has probably the most flat ponderosa pine country, which is the squirrels preferred habitat. All the country around Reserve, Apache Creek has squirrels. One of my favorite drives is from Apache creek to snow lake. Very pretty and you'll probably see lots of squirrels.

Good luck,

Travis

Anyone ever hunted Tassle Eared Squirells in AZ Unit 31 or 33? I am thinking of a trip to 31 but don't know where to start looking?

Unit 31 has alot of Abert's or Tassel Eared Squirrels. Try Trip Cannon anywhere past Dick's Cabin all the way to the top. Dick's Cabin no longer exists but there is a concrete slab still present. Driving up the mountain near Riggs is also good.

10/22 with a scope is alot of fun! Take alot of ammo cause they hide well in the trees.

12ga is ok but lacks the sport of picking them off.
