WFGinNM Report post Posted May 5, 2010 Are you looking for Elk or Deer? Most of the elk here where I live in NM have already dropped their antlers, find areas with fairly fresh sign and start hiking and glassing. Antler hunting is not about how many antlers you find in an hour, but how many you find per miles you walk. Goodluck and keep us posted, --Bill
cowboy hunter Report post Posted May 5, 2010 so should i look up canyons or draws or on the open flats
Non-Typical Solutions Report post Posted May 5, 2010 To quote the great Randy Ulmer, sorry Randy, "look where the antlers are!" Technically that is a misquote. In one of Randy's hunting articles he listed 10 steps to being a successful hunter and one of his steps is to "Glass where the game are." Try to think of where the animals might have been during the winter but have now started moving to summer grounds. Some years you can find them where they spent the winter, other years somewhere between winter and summer. Found some in the flats, some on the tops of ridges, some of them on the steepest side of a ridge you could imagine. Some of them in stuff so thick you couldn't imagine an elk fitting through. In Unit 10 you can walk for miles and miles and never see an elk, deer or an antler so make sure you try to pinpoint high concentration areas of where the critters hang out during prime time dropping....... Good luck out there and go find em......

Coach Report post Posted May 8, 2010 If you look at some of the stud shed-finders on this site, you might think it's almost easy to go snag a backpack full of antler sheds. Every Spring I go out looking for horns, walking miles day after day, finding bulls still wearing their headgear and trying to get them to run through thick enough stuff to make them drop. It always amazes me how these guys set out to find sheds and actually do it. Almost every shed I've found has been purely accidental - during a turkey hunt or some such nonesense, and usually close to a road. The funny part is, I've hiked an amazing amount of country while shed hunting, scouting, or just trying to get to know an area and I have NEVER walked up on or glassed a good shed - save for the San Carlos rez where I didn't dare pick any up. The small ones I've found have been purely coincidence. The guys that find good horns, and lots of them are right here on this site. They put serious miles on their boots. They do their homework and follow herds all through the year. Hunting sheds is a great way to get to know the habits of deer and elk, and every hour you spend out there looking for sheds will eventually pay off. You'll have a better understanding of their habits and patterns. Keep up the good work but try not to be discouraged when you aren't finding any. It will come - at least that's what I keep telling myself - LOL.
AZP&Y Report post Posted May 8, 2010 Go on ebay. JK.... Man that's a tough question...I would also mention conditioning. Be in the best shape you can and walk where most people won't. Stay safe and you may even find a nice Lion Kill , which can be as exciting as finding 10 sheds - It's if a nice fresh brown buck. AzP&Y
Pixman Report post Posted May 8, 2010 I have found a few sheds over the years but haven't found any elk sheds in years so I decided this was the year! I have tried 4 different times and places and hiked about 12 miles and didn't find anything not even an old one! I did see elk every trip so I know I am going in elk country but it isn't easy. Keep trying and dont think that everyone finds antlers all the time , you just see the people that have had success on here not the unsuccessful trips!
