Mr. Jonathan Report post Posted April 30, 2010 My mom recently asked me to help my great aunt who is in her mid-70's with a deer hunt this year. She shoots a .270, but walking will be limited to a few hundred yards and rather slow-paced. She hasn't harvested a big game animal in a few years (she was quite the big game hunter in years past though!), and size is not an issue- just a legal animal is all that is wanted. She currently lives in northern Arizona. I was thinking about an october coues hunt in one of the areas around Tuscon where I've bowhunted, just because of the opportunity to draw a tag and hunt. We will be limited to shot opportunities that are somewhat close to roads, but that doesn't mean we'll only be driving while we hunt. I figured I'd glass until we find an animal that we could get reasonably close to with a car and then close on foot to shooting distance, which will probably be 200 yards max. Any thoughts? Any advice? Are there any carp hunts that might be a better choice for this kind of hunt? I appreciate any helpful information you all might be willing to share. Scouting is not a problem either, so I'm not looking for specific locations, just general info that might lend itself to helping an elderly hunter harvest an animal. Thanks! .270 Report post Posted April 30, 2010 don't know much about the tucson area, but i know your predicament. we have all these youth hunts. why ain't there a geezer hunt? my dad is on the other side of 80 and it gets harder and harder to get him on a buck every year. and he gets yanked off at hisself because he can't get around very well and thinks he keeping me from hunting. but it ain't a big deal to me. i'll still take him. my aunt who is 72 got a late bull and a pronghorn permit this year. but she can go like heck still. i really look forward to those hunts. don't have much advise as to what unit, but i do that you're taking on an admirable task. good luck. i'm starting to feel the years. won't be long until my kids'll be lugging me around. good luck whatever you do. Lark. Thanks, Lark for thinking about us geezers. We need an early elk hunt around my cabin for geezers, especially those of us with Pioneer licenses. Like your father and Mr. Jonathon's aunt, I have trouble walking very far but I don't qualify for a CHAMP permit yet. Mr. Jonathon: PM me and I'll suggest a spot down here where glassing from a vehicle should find you a whitetail buck for your aunt. Bill Quimby
Snapshot Report post Posted May 1, 2010 Mr. Jonathan, Finding a good spot to sit in an area with game movement, and or the ability to maybe push game towards her might be a good bet. Find a good waterhole and setup an ambush?? Bill, Having a senior's only hunt is a great idea.
peckl1 Report post Posted May 2, 2010 I hunt 36a all the time. If you put in for that unit and get drawn let me know. I can show you some areas you can take your great aunt. There are several big ravines that you can put her on if you are looking for mule deer. Lee
.270 Report post Posted May 3, 2010 bill, i've felt for a long time that there ought to be a true old timers hunt for at least deer and elk. say they have to be 70 or so and lived here a long time. if they ever do have one it might not be a big success but it'd sure be fun to watch. WalkingW Report post Posted May 3, 2010 I have been blessed with the opportunity to guide on several hunts for hunters with limited mobility issues. I know the north central part of the state real well and would be more than happy to point out some spots for your aunt to hunt. I have found that most older hunters do not like to travel far for their hunts. If this is the case let me know and I might be able to point you in the right direction for some nice bucks both Coues and Mule deer that are easy to get to. Your aunt sounds like a great person to get to know; she could more than likely teach us all a thing or two about hunting. I think it is a great thing to be able to go hunting with someone that has the passion but not the body to hunt hard. I have learned to not sweat the small stuff “ie what unit” and just trust in the lord on these hunts. I have been on hunts that were hard hunts for someone that was in shape and had game do some just unbelievable stuff. They are always the most fulfilling hunts because any able-bodied person should be capable of taking big game.
joeybari Report post Posted May 3, 2010 Old geezers hunt Come on what else do you people want I’m so tried of these old people expecting to get things handed to them all the time. Just because you served our country, worked hard to build the foundation of America, paid your taxes for 65 + years, paid into Medicare for 65 + years so on and so on. Just because Medicare is broke, the taxes that you paid went to the wrong things, the wars that you served are being swapped under the rug, younger generations are to busy to sit down and talk to you and hear your stores about life, and you want a geezers hunt you don’t deserve it. You have not done anything for this country to get some thing like that. LOL Personally I think there should be a 1) Geezers discount 50% on all tags 2) If you go with a 15 to 18 year old the hunt is free 3) Definitely week or two only geezers hunt prime hunting spots I think this is a good idea for one it’s a small jester for a generation that has given so much and expects so little. And if it were not for my grandfather I would not be the man, father I am today. Thank you Geezers
