coueshunter Report post Posted April 22, 2010 Deerhunter: I would put it up right away. The only issue is worrying about it getting stolen so hopefully your spot is not somewhere where everyone see's your treestand. I would lock it to the tree and mark it with an engraver. If you put it up by the water hole, make sure you are around 25 yards away (just not so close you spook the deer) if you are thinking of a trail, set up where you have trails crossing each other, an intersection where your chances are higher that deer will move through. I would set up salt so the deer stay in front of you longer instead of just walking by................

gotcoues Report post Posted April 23, 2010 Deerhunter, Hey, I was just playing around last night. I didn't want to come across as an a hole, just making a sarcastic funny bro. On a second note, no reason to put stand up now (your just increasing your odds of theft is all that will achieve). They will never notice your stand, only movement while you’re in it. Deer don't tend to look up in the trees. SCENT & MOVEMENT are your biggest enemies using a stand. I put my stands up 2 to 3 weeks before season. Try to be at least 20 feet up, I prefer 25 or more. The higher you are the easier it is to draw your bow undetected and I believe it helps with dissipating your scent. Try to set up a shot of 20 yards or less (less chance they will jump the string) and for rifle I would go back 100 yards or more (it's all about the scent factor). Face the stand north to prevent a beat down from the sun. Try to pick a tree that is leaning south just a bit, it will be much more comfortable to sit in if you can lean back a bit, also a branch at head height for your bow hook and/or gear works well. When I walk into my stand I bag my clothes in my pack until I'm getting close. I change, spray down heavily with Primos dirt scent and bag my walking clothes, spray them and put them in my pack. If you plan on trying salt, you can set up a very close shot from high above. Use rocks and down tree branches to ensure the deer will likely be in a position that is favorable for a bow shot. Sight in your bow from a roof top or your stand before the hunt, it will probably need a 5 yard adjustment to compensate for the downward angle. Also if you not using a ladder stand you can tie a rope to your stand and use a tree limb to hoist it up and have a friend hold the rope or tie if off. Much easier to mount your stand if you’re not supporting the weight of the stand while you’re trying to mount it. I always use a harness, once you use it a few times they are no big deal at all. One last thing, try to set everything up so you can shoot while sitting down. There is much less movement if you don't have to stand up. Hope some of this helps, good luck on your bow hunt and shoot straight Justin
