Superior, Globe Offer Flowers

& Photography April 16-17-18

Superior, AZ: Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior and the Round Mountain

Park in Globe are each higher elevation than the valley, wildflowers reach

peak color in mid-April and native species include golden Wallflower,

indigo-blue Delphinium, white clusters of Desert Onions and other flowers

interspersed with vivid magenta Hedgehog Cacti blossoms.

The weekend of April 16-17-18 offers flower fans and photographers a

chance to learn to ID wildflowers – and to photograph them in their

natural glory, too. Arizona Native Plants Society member Cass Blodgett

leads two Saturday flower walks: at 11:00 a.m. at the Arboretum (included

with daily $7.50 admission), then he’ll head east to Globe to lead a

3:00-5:00 flower tour at Round Mountain Park (free admission and no park

fee to attend Cass’ afternoon walk).

Springerville pro photographer Maggie Leef has five classes to choose

from, too, showcasing April color at the Arboretum and also Round Mountain

Park, and with classes ranging from beginners’ photography to more

advanced “in the field” workshops -- even a classroom session teaching

intermediate-level users of PhotoShop a range of effects in the popular

digital imaging software. Classes at the Arboretum range from $37.50 to

for $52.50 for PhotoShop.

to enroll have a credit card ready and call Arboretum staff at

520-689-2723 during daytime business hours.

Leef offers two Sunday workshops in Globe April 18 sponsored by the Globe

Chamber of Commerce; these include ‘Beginners’ Photography’ in the

morning and a flower-specific field study workshop that same afternoon.

For Sunday workshop registration call Chamber of Commerce staff at

BOYCE THOMPSON ARBORETUM April 16-17

* Basic Flower and Garden Photography April 16, Friday, from 9:00 -

12:00. $37.50 Beginners and intermediate photographers: learn basic,

practical skills to improve flower and garden photography. Topics

covered include composition, exposure and metering, light, using color

to create mood, problem colors and color casts, and dealing with wind.

Also covered will be utilizing different camera settings and using

aids, props and some optional equipment. Shooting in wet weather will

also be covered.

* GardenScapes -- an 'In The Field' Shoot April 16, Friday, 2:00 - 4:30

PM. $37.50 You've read your manual, you understand basic photography

concepts and are getting comfortable adjusting the dials on your

camera... what's next? Apply what you've learned with a Friday

afternoon in-the-field shoot.

* Simple Effects in PhotoShop April 17, Saturday, from 9:00-12:00. Got

Photoshop, but you've never progressed much past simply cropping and

resizing your JPGs? Whether you have Elements, Photoshop 6, 7, CS2 or

comparable image-editing program, it's time to get higher mileage out

of your software. After a short introduction to image preservation and

layers, students will learn how to enhance their images with a variety

of special effects, including Soft Mist, Vignetting, Colorizing and

Tinting.

ROUND MOUNTAIN PARK IN GLOBE April 18

• Beginners' Photography & Camera Class: Sunday, April 18, 10:00 a.m. to

1:00 p.m. Your point-and-shoot digital camera is more powerful than you

may know -- and includes a range of settings which replicate fancier, much

more costly digital SLRs. This is an indoor classroom session designed for

beginners – even if you’re still shooting with film -- even if you only

use a disposable camera! Learn the most basic camera techniques, as well

as a few intermediate and advanced tricks with Springerville nature

photographer Maggie Leef. $37.50 ; call 425-4495 to enroll. Check out

Maggie’s work at leefphotography.com . “I'm offering this class by

popular demand, said Leef, noting that a Globe resident asked if she ever

offered classes to novice photographers who haven't found the time to

learn more about their digital cameras. "We'll cover the basics, I'll also

demystify the camera manual and help participants get more out of their

settings and options."

• Round Mountain Park April Flowers: Sunday, April 18 from 3:30 - 5:30

p.m.; also Monday morning, April 19, from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. The City of

Globe's Round Mountain park has lovely wildflowers, color typically peaks

during April and this month two photography classes are timed to

capitalize on the blooms from Wallflower, Delphinium and brilliant magenta

Hedgehog cacti. Learn to capture their beauty with your digital camera

alongside a pro photographer. Both in-the-field classes are limited to

eight students, allowing plenty of one-on-one time for students to pose

their own questions about camera settings, modes and applications.

Enrollees should bring their camera manual along; also a tripod if you own

one. Cost is $37.50; call the Globe-Miami Chamber of Commerce at

928-425-4495 to enroll.
