hunterofcoues Report post Posted August 14, 2005 Hey everybody, I had a question about road access into Unit 23. Anybody who knows that area give me a call at 520-349-9809. Thanks, Joe
coueshunter Report post Posted August 15, 2005 Joe, there is alot of road access. which general direction are you wondering about? There are roads around Roosevelt, roads up into the Sierra Ancha experimental area etc, etc, etc. Get a map and it will show you the roads........AT........ bullwidgeon Report post Posted August 15, 2005 Roads everywhere, that's probably why there are no deer left anymore. The Young road runs the North-South length of the unit also the Cherry Creek road runs a long darn ways through it. The A-cross road runs the entire East-West southern end of it. All these roads have a bunch of smaller roads poking off them, and there are other major roads I do not even know about on the North and West ends of the unit. A guy could go through a few tanks of gas in a little 4-banger foreign truck and still not see all the roads in that country. Good luck. Bret M.
hunterofcoues Report post Posted August 15, 2005 Thanks everyone, I specifically was wondering about the Cherry Creek road from the South approach. There are a couple of points where it crosses through private land. I didn't want to plan a trip way back in there and find the road locked at a private gate 3 miles in. On a side note, I was jogging up Sabino Canyon outside of Tucson and saw a bobcat and 3 whitetail bucks all within 20 yards of the road. Anyone know if there are hunting restrictions in there? It might be poor etiquette to fire my 270 at a tame deer 20 yards from the visitor center, but what about bowhunting? I'd like to get a bobcat with my bow... BowhuntCoues Report post Posted August 16, 2005 No not to many critters in 23 they all moved to the reservation. Funny how they dissapear like that. I was on the Cherry road last fall and it is still passable. You do have to watch out for Yeti up there though.
Rembrant Report post Posted August 16, 2005 Unit 23 really sucks. Don't waste your time in there. Used to be a good population of jack-a-lopes in there, bit even they have been wiped out by out of work miners, fires and drought. It amazes me that the game dept can still sell tags for that unit and sleep at night! Unit 45 sounds like your best bet for whitetails, Bowhunterforlife knows what he's talking about. bcoover Report post Posted August 16, 2005 Most of us remember when 23 was good, but that was about 10 years ago. It has just been hunted too much and the deer populations have been at an all time low. Just about the only thing you can find there now is rattle snakes. I would hunt somewhere else. '' I would try hunting in unit 22, there are much more deer in and around there. That is where I am going....
Rembrant Report post Posted August 16, 2005 Uh, wait a minute. I think unit 22 is pretty sucky too! The whole dang unit burned didn't it? Ain't nothin left! 45. That's the unit. Yeah, Unit 45. Mike
bcoover Report post Posted August 17, 2005 You are right again Mike. I forgot about 45. But I think the secret is out on 45. That is all we have been talking about all summer. Everyone on this web site is going to be there. I would think twice about going to 22. I might have to go and join you down in 45.
muskeg Report post Posted August 17, 2005 It amazes me that the game dept can still sell tags for that unit and sleep at night! It's to try to get that big ole Tom Lion .... thier hoping that some "deer" hunter will shoot it .... I think he killed off what deer were left around there Be sure and get a Lion tag Joe ..... By the way are there any Javelinas down in that #45?
Tonto Report post Posted August 17, 2005 Better believe it, 22 looks worse than the moon. All burned to shoot. Matter fact, you can trail every critter from here right across 23 and onto the pristine Res. People here have been glueing old sheds on their farm animals just so we locals will have something with horns to shoot. Tonto That unit 45 is lookin better all the time.
