desert ranger Report post Posted March 31, 2010 I finally drew a late season Bull Elk tag! My question to those with 25-06 experience and only those with this experience; am I making a mistake if I take mine when loaded with 120 Nosler Partitions or simular bullets? I know its the guy behind the gun and that placement is everything but what has YOUR experience taught you Thanks!
Tines Report post Posted March 31, 2010 I shot a cow at 50yrds with a 25-06 110gr Accubond. She went 10yrds and piled up. Obviously there's better calibers for elk but depending on the circumstances, I wouldn't hesitate in your choice of caliber or bullet. Good Luck!
tjhunt2 Report post Posted March 31, 2010 You can kill an elk with a 22, not leagally, if placement is right. I have a 25-06 and my suggestion would be to go with something a little bigger unless you know for sure you are going to shoot it at a close range. Good luck on your hunt. cactusjack Report post Posted March 31, 2010 I love my 25-06. Now here comes the however, however I do not use it on elk due to its lack of energy down range. I want to maxamize my odds of dropping an elk with one shot. It is so hard to finally draw a tag nowdays, I dont want to risk losing my elk due to an under powered bullet. Just sayin
EagleEye Report post Posted March 31, 2010 Shot at a cow with mine at 205 yards I know I hit her but never found it was very very thick rainforest like country up in Oregon not sure if she made or not. Now I would take something a lttle bigger. Then again same crop damage hunt in Oregon saw a cow shot in the head with 243 at 300 plus yards dropped like rock. My 2 cents. youngbuck Report post Posted March 31, 2010 Id go bigger if I had a gun bigger, if not I'd use the quarter bore. Get closer, make a good shot, and you will be fine.
.270 Report post Posted March 31, 2010 thousands of elk are killed every year with bows and muzzleloaders. every one of which is inferior to your .25/'06. use a good bullet, no balistic tips or hollowpoints, and have fun. the nosler partition is an excellent choice. good luck. rogeti Report post Posted March 31, 2010 Used my 25-06 on all 8 of my elk and all it is is shot placement. Ive seen missile launchers hit elk and they run away. Shot placement is what it takes. I use 120 grain for my loads too.
Couesdeer Report post Posted March 31, 2010 Like others have already posted.... A 120 Gr. partition out of your 25-06 will kill an elk just fine. I've seen the same combo work on elk from ranges of 75-300+ yards.
metau Report post Posted April 1, 2010 1st off, grats on the tag. 2nd, I've seen a 25-06 take 3 cow elk cleanly, but all shots were where they needed to be and the longest was just under 150 yards. The only mistakes you can make are to take a gun you are not confident in shooting, or not knowing/exceeding your limitations. (Pertaining to question at hand)
CouseforLife Report post Posted April 1, 2010 Not trying to start a fight but comparing a bullet to a broadhead is not correct. Two different principles all together. One cuts the other uses energy and expansion. I think comparing ML to high power rifles is wrong also. Again two different principles. To the point, your 25-06 will work just fine as everyone has said that shot placement will be key. I personally would not use it past 250-300 yards. Downrange ballistics becomes an issue at those ranges.
