Dan H Report post Posted August 11, 2005 Question: Recently bleached a skull from a WT I had in my freezer and was wondering if anyone knows the rules on how long tags are to be attached to the harvested deer. Obviosly if you tag them thru the gambrel its over unless you make a coat rack or something out of their legs and want what looks like a reciept left on the thing. Does the tag have to remain attached to the anlters? Is it illegal to remove them and dispose of them? Taxidermists I've used normally all staple the tag to the back of the mounts. Maybe thats just a courtesy thing and helps them identify ownership. I'll wee what the WT community has to say on this topic. Thanks, Dan
Rembrant Report post Posted August 11, 2005 I was just searching for the answer in what I have available - a 2003-2004 reg book. This is a pretty good question, as in R12-4-302, I am not seeing anything about when the tag is no longer required. This could be interpreted that it is always required to identify a legal kill, though I don't think anyone would get cited for having some mounts or skulls lying around. I do know that you gotta have your tag on the animal while transporting it to its final destination. Taxidermists and meat cutters will need to see the tag so they can include the information on their report to the Dept. I think one of the main legal concerns is that the tag is properly used so that it cannot be used again. anybody else? Mike
.270 Report post Posted August 11, 2005 about all the regs say is that the tag has to accompany the meat to where it is to be processed. the locker plant or your house. a taxidermist will require the tag before he'll work on anything for you. i always leave tags on antlers. and if i do take one off, i keep it. have a bunch of em. most taxidermists will staple the tag to the back of the mount, shoulder mounts anyway, so you'll always have it there. they need to make bear and lion tags about twice as long as they are. pain the neck to have to skin back a hind leg to get to the gambrel so you can attach the tag. BASS Report post Posted August 11, 2005 Rembrant brought a good point, who else has lost their '05 regs? I have over eight 03-04 books, but noe one 05. And when I went to get one, there were no more. I would think that it needs to be on the animal while in the feild. I would consider being transported as being in the feild too, until it got to it's destination. Dan H Report post Posted August 12, 2005 Rembrant thanks for looking,.. I figured I would leave it on until I take it to a taxidermist to fix one tip broken off a third point on one side. Atleast then it will be logged. Those tags are tuff it withstood the boiling water and bleach and the unit # along with other printed data is clear as can be. Is there any certain stain that you recommend to touch up a little of the bases that are bleached? Thanks, again Dan
muledeerarea33? Report post Posted August 13, 2005 had a neighbor in Morenci who had a dozen or so racks hanging on the outside wall of his garage some were sheding that were found out and about and some were kills. we had a new game warden in the area and he cited him for every antler that was not tagged. saying that if he could not prove the kill it was considered poaching. dont know the exact rules but thats just an experience we had Daniel
