Hey folks,

I hunt 24B for quail quite often. I have seen some small bucks in the unit, but nothing that is huge. I applied for this unit for whitetails and I drew. I am not e-scouting because I have some places to go, but I thought I would get other opinions on this unit from the board. Has anyone seen any toads, or should I take the first stub that runs through? I just thought I would see what everyone has to say about this unit. (Also if you tie a good one up to a fence post, I'll take it off your hands, ha, ha!)

Thanks!

There are some good deer in the wilderness area. I would hold out for awhile especially if you can hunt till after Christmas with that tag and get a good ways back into the area.

I drew that tag too! I have a couple places I frequent, but not too sure this year. the big burn near superior was over 10,000 acres. That much area burnt may push a lot of hunters into the areas I usually frequent since they won't want to go to the burn area.

I may take a few scout trips to look at some spots I know about coming in from Roosevelt, and Apache lake side of the unit. Have not been in there in 4-5 years so It could be time to make a return trip.

Probably a few weeks till I go out and plant a camera or 3. hopefully get some driving time to see what is burnt and not.

Good Luck to you!

Seems like there was a 24b hread a couple weeks back, maybe use the search function entering 24b.

AZ4LIfe,

that peachville burn you alluded to is gonna be a real good deal for whitetail habitat. It burned a whole lot of chapparal country and in some areas burned in patches or a mosaic pattern. The areas that burned super hot and look black will eventually improve too, probably sooner than one would think. The Armer Mtn burn (Unit 23) occurred in the Summer of 1994, and the deer were all over it right away. You may be right, and folks may avoid the area. If that's the case, is cause they aren't aware of the overwhelming benefits that a chapparal burn offers a piece of country and the whitetails that live in it. Hope you find a good one.

quailchaser,

We took two small bucks opening day two years ago in the Superstition Wilderness Area because we did not have a lot time to hunt. It is rough but we didn't see any other hunters. I feel that there has to be big deer in there. As a matter of fact, that same year someone posted a pic of a very nice deer that was taken in the Wilderness on the last day of the season with rifle. I believe it is in the photo gallery somewhere. We hunted at 6000 feet and it snowed. Hope for snow because it make finding them while glassing a lot easier. We were about 1 to 1.5 miles in and it seemed like we climbed that high to get to our glassing point. It was dense Manzanita bush so mobility was that much harder. Long story short, anywhere in the Wilderness would be great, just have patience, dress in layers because the wind at that elevations is brutal, and glass glass glass. I will see deer for sure. I love the place and hope to hunt in 24B or 22 next year.

I was looking for bears the other day and on the way in decided to glass around the edge of the burn for a little bit to see what was going on with it and there are deer everywhere on the edge of it. As soon as all this rain greens it up the deer will be right back in the middle of it. By the edge of the burn, I mean 90% of the deer I glassed up were withing 100 yards of burned stuff. Do not over look the fringes of the burn this year. Good luck guys
