I would like to get a better camera but not break the bank doing it.

Dougs photos really have me wanting to take better pictures

but can't afford the equipment He has.

Any input would be appreciated.

I'm not sure Doug.

I have not any research.

Being the owner of 3 Swarovski optics

I understand quality is important.

I would hope under $200.00 is possible

but if not I will save for a while.

Take a look at the Panasonic SER-S26. It is a very small compact but it has a 70x optical zoom. I sold my Canon GL1 this winter and bought this one. I have only used it a couple of times so far but what I have seen I really like it. I shot some video of some Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep from about 300 yards away and I was very happy. Obviously when you get to the highest power and are as old as I am a tripod is needed. I can't wait to use it on a hunt from the tripod and see how well it works. With the Canon and the digital zoom when you got to the higher powers it became very grainy. With this one it does not do that since it is optical. This model takes a regular SD card so it is easy to store a lot of video in a small space and since there are no moving parts with a tape etc the battery seems to last rather long. This is not an HD so if you are looking at broadcast quality that the tv shows are looking for it would cost a lot more. But for personal used You Tube etc. it will work great. I bought it from Best Buy for a little over $200. I believe the regular price without being on sale is still under $300. Just my two cents worth. Good luck

I believe 300 was talkin camcorders. On my still camera wish list is the cannon sx210IS. They arent shipping them yet but they look promising, and i'm familiar w/ their menu format. My old cannon bit the dust dec WT hunting :(

For a point and Shoot under $300, I'd consider the Panasonic ZS1 compared here

For about $500 you can get the Panasonic FZ 35 which has good reviews.

But for that same $, I would get something like a Canon XSi with 18-55mm and get like a 70-300 lens when more $ arrives.

If you have more $, we'll help you spend it ;)

gamehauler, i just bought a Canon XS DSLR camera from Cameraland. they have a pretty good deal going right now. I got the camera with two lenses, including a 300 mm, a memory card, and camera case for $625. The camera is awesome for an entry level SLR.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

I bought my two off of E-Bay and spent about 700.00 total for them both with tons of extras and they were the Nikon D40 and Nikon D80. Try E-bay just watch out for shutter count. Make sure you ask what the shutter count is. D80 would be awesome for you and you would love it. just my 2cents

Bet you could get this for about 425.00 by the end of bidding. If you type in Nikon D80 you can find tons of pages just remember to contact the seller and ask about the shutter count. ;)

One part of the ad say the lens is 18-135, but another part says 70-300 and is what is pictured. Mike would then need a shorter FL lens, like 18-50 for landscape, family and portraits.

Also Mike, be sure the lenses have VR/IS (vibration reduction/image stabilization) for when you hand-hold the camera.

My wife uses the pentax k 10D I think is what it is. It is an SLR camera. I think they are great for the outdoorsman because they are all seals from dust and water. The camera it's self has the anti shake built into it. So the lenses are cheaper than others becUse the anti shake is built into the lenses of other brands. She is a pro photographer and does it for a living. She has alway been a nikon freak but when she saw the cuality of this camera and the prices of the lenses and a good talk wit cameraland she decided to go the route of the pentax.
