Couestracker Report post Posted February 24, 2010 Opening day of my unit 37B H.A.M. javelina hunt started out promising, as I caught wind of them in two different areas. A real strong smell with the breeze in my face, but I never saw any all day. On the second day, I was seeing some fresh tracks here and there, but just one or two pigs worth. I decided to follow one set of tracks, and after about a mile from where I had started, I jumped about 8 javelina. They ran off behind some brush and I didn't have a shot. I stopped to see if there were any stragglers, and then I heard one crying/screaming! I remembered a friend told me to make a loud smacking noise with my mouth with some grunts mixed in, so I tried that. Of course that didn't work, so I proceeded to head the direction they ran off to and within another 100 yds, I saw through the brush two javelina jump up from their beds. One ran behind the brush and the other one stood there looking my way, not quite quartering away. So I brought up my pistol, aimed for its neck and fired-and dropped it in its bed! I ran over to it, but it was down for good with an entry wound in it's neck. It turned out to be a boar and I weighed him at 51 lbs. I ranged the shot at 42 yds after I went back for my empty casing. After high-fives and pictures, I field dressed him and weighed him back in camp at 36.4 lbs. When I skinned it out, I discovered that my bullet had caught the lower back corner of its jaw and took out a chunk of bone before entering the neck. A keeper skull for sure! But I did not realize that a tactical with about 16 inches of barrel and looking to be a .223 with the butt stock removed fit into the legal definition of HAND GUN ... I have a Ruger Ranch gun in .223 that breaks down the same way that I would like to use on H.A.M hunts if it does ... anyone here know for sure ???? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

CouesTracker Guess I was right on the caliber but guess in the pic the barrel length seemed a little long in proportion to your hand even looks longer than the 15 in TC's .... Like I said was not sure and thought I would ask the ones who may know .... pretty slick gun none the less ... So if it is sold and registered as a pistol it is a legal hand gun to hunt with right? So I would take it that with a 10.5 " barrel technically it is not legal to put a Buttstock on it ? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
