Strangest thing that has ever came into your call???

I was elk calling in the gila in new mexico about 8 years ago, and i had 3 mexican grey wolves come into 20 yards. They stayed there for 10 minutes. Ugly critters , always thought they would look more majestic.

Does flagging count? Had land near Datil, NM with about 70 antelope on it. Told my kids I could attract the fast goats with something as repelling as my boy's tighty whitey's. Hung them up in a juniper a couple hundred feet from camp and sure enough the next morning we had 3 bucks sniffing his fruit of the looms. .

Boarder patrol agents several times. Once down by San Simon had a boarder patrol helicopter come and hover over me 40' up while they surveyed the situation.

 

Concerning the lion killed w/o a tag. If you self-report, most times you will walk away with no citation. I had a new hunter who had not only never hunted but this was his first time shooting a firearm. 1st stand, 30 seconds in and in comes a lion and he shoots it at 15 yards with a shotgun. This was before shotguns shooting shot were allowed. We called G&F and an agent and he came and took out story and issued no tickets but he did confiscate the lion. Small price to pay for a major mistake.

had a gila monster come to the caller with rodent dest he climbed right up on it I know the eats baby mice and bird eggs didn't know they would come to sound maybe it was just in his way that sound brings lots of road runners get my shear of bp agents had a wolf come in on the blue river in 27 in the last 20 years guess I have called everything that eats meat except a lion will get it done sooner or later

I was calling for a friend a few years ago for turkey when we noticed a spike elk coming in to our turkey decoy. I stopped calling and the spike pulled the turkey decoy out of the ground and just stood there with it in it's mouth's. We couldn't believe it. It then tossed it in the air and retrieved it and did it again like a puppy with a toy. We were reaching for our cameras but not in time to witness this.

Javelina, deer, raccoons, while predator calling. For that matter, when a coyote or bocat comes in to my call, I find it wierd!

While varmint and turkey calling, we've had hogs come in in CA. While turkey calling, I had a hen come in from my blind side and stare at me from inches away. I finally blinked and she turned inside out running away. Thought she was going to peck my face. we had a couple nice Toms just out of range, so she blew that spot. We headed up the ridge and pigs had been coming down. I shot a 300lb boar at 20' right between the eyes as he came at us. That was an interesting day. Those hogs check out anything sometimes since they will make anything food.

Yesterday I was calling for fox and had a falcon and hawk land 20 yards from me and stare at my foxpro

Bobcat, coyote, fox, javelina, feral cat, domestic cows, deer, abandoned dogs, numerous birds of prey, rabbits....and a chicken.

I start every year with a lion tag. I killed mine on a deer hunt. I figure it's a lottery ticket that lasts one year.

Same here. Pure stupidity to not have one if you go predator calling. No different than going elk hunting, trying to call in an elk without a tag, and then killing it, and then telling G&F it was attacking you. There should be no sympathy for anyone killing one without a tag, if they called it in.

I love calling. I’ve called in hawks, elk, mule and coues deer, turkey, bear, lion, rabbit, a wolf, javelina, foxes, coyotes, hunters and loved every minute of it. I’ve called in cows and once tried to spook 3 angus bulls with a bear growl. Instead of running off they went for the call. No fear at all of the bear. I had to turn it off so they wouldn’t stomp it. You learn about the animals behavior in ways you never could in other ways. It’s elk cows that respond to a calf call almost exclusively yet when several elk calves hesitated by a water hole and the other elk were leaving, it was 3 bulls that returned to escort the calves back to the herd. Not saying it’s always that way but it was that time.

When I first started to call in coyote I had a pair of large owls fly right over my head and land within 20’ right at dust.  Of the millions of things I don’t know about hunting, the first thing is owls fly silently.  The 2nd thing was to make a plan for #2!  In fact I learned both of those things at the same time!
