coueshunter Report post Posted January 21, 2010 This was really a fun hunt. We started monday the 28th, hiking in about 1 mile and spent the whole day back in there. We saw 48 does and 2 bucks, nothing worth going after. Tuesday we hunted up north in the unit in the morning. Saw 13 does. really windy. Tuesday mid day we went way down south and hiked back in about 1 mile. We had 5 border patrol trucks come in on a road north of us and a helicopter hover over our heads. About 1/2 hour later three agents hiked into where we were glassing from. We relocated but the afternoon hunt was screwed. We saw 12 more deer, one good buck but couldnt get on him. Wed morning we went to an area that hopefully had less people activity. We hiked up to a knob and waited for light. We immediately saw a group of muley does on the flats and a few coues does. At 10:15 I picked up a buck way way out on a ridge. I watched him till he beddded, and we relocated by hiking around the backside of the ridge and then straight up. After getting into position, we glassed our butts off but could not find the bedded buck. it was really really brushy, so we just kept glassing, waiting him out. At 3:15 Brent picked him up, he had gotten up to reposition himself. I got the gun on the last spot we saw him and waited. At 3:30 he got up and moved out from behind some ocotillo/mesquite stuff. Once he hit an opening I shot him. He stumbled about 5 yards and went down. Those Barnes X really do some damage. It was a great hunt, a real team effort. Thanks.............Allen.............
