Between the cat claw, loose gravel, and the fact that these deer are super wary, I can't get within striking distance. How can a guy close the gap on these critters without using a blind/stand? I haven't been a rifle hunter in a long time, but this is making me rethink archery!

This guy ran all over the mountain, but intercepting him was impossible because he'd switch directions, and sneaking quietly was impossible because of the terrain, even after today's rainfall! What's the deal?

Haha! The rut has started. It (for me) is pretty frustrating. You get to see alot more deer, but they are always moving. I don't have the patients for that, but I have found the patients to just watch'em through the scope. You just gotta find one in a spot where you can kill'em. It might take some time (sometimes days), but it will happen. Just don't buggar it up like I did. Good luck!

Stay well,

that is a nice buck, im no expert on coues but im guessing he is big cause he is way smarter than you or I or any one else on his case, but thats why we love them. You got some great pics and are getting more knowledge. just keep doing what your doing and when it all comes together it will be awesome. keep the wind good and elevation on him if you can. and if you cant get it done this time give me a call in a few months and we can go track up his horns when he drops um :)

good luck!

Hunting animals in steep, noisy terrain with a bow is probably the most difficult hunting there is.

If all else fails, put on some baers feet or sneakers and get aggressive in your stalking. He might bust you, but you got nothing to lose by getting after him.

These deer are hunted everyday since they are born. This buck knows his home better than you ever will and how to use it. But, right now he is pre-occupied with girls. Trying to intercept a buck with love on his mind is a luck thing because he is covering as much ground as possible. Find his scrapes and stay close. I'd hunt him down, slow and steady. Brush him up and hunt him there. Be patient. Sometimes we have to let the buck come to us. I was trailed by a buck once. I kept hearing little noises behind me in a wash. I was following his trail and he got back on me. Freaked me out. I missed him at 15 yds. Patience. And a sense of humor. These venados will make you laugh at yourself. They made me realize that - I'm a funny guy. Someday I'll tell you about the time I charged a group of bucks. Suerte.
