Best Sheep Capture EVER

Recommended Posts

I was lucky enough to have some time today to go to a sheep capture near my hometown of Las Vegas. These captures are always a blast, but this one was very special. Today our goal was to transport 25 sheep, and every one of them was to be a mature ram! I haven't been involved in our sheep group for very long (Fraternity of the Desert Bighorn) but no one, not even the old salty guys who have been around for forever, can remember a capture where we caught as many rams of this size. This is an area that is closed off to hunting and the population of older rams has gotten to the point where some of them needed to be removed. The rams that were caught were transported to areas that needed a boost so it was a win-win. The smallest ram we captured we guessed was in the mid 150's and the largest was in the low 170's. It was an unbeleivable day.

Crazy how gentle the pilot can put them down...

This was one of the biggest rams of the day. A Book ram for sure. I'm the goofy guy with his hat backwards. The chopper kept blowing it off

My cousin with another good ram.

My cousins son and nephew were also there and had a blast. They got to help hold a few rams down and fold the nets up to use in the guns again.

My favorite picture of the day. Check out the bruiser laying down ;)

And this guy was by far my favorite ram of the day. They aged this old guy at 13 1/2  . They decided the stress of moving him might be too much for the old timer so we let him go after a good looking over. He had sinusitis (sp?) pretty bad, but was in great health other than that.

Closer pic of the sinusitis.

The capture was very successful and all these rams are currently on their way to their new homes. It was a day I won't soon forget, and who knows - maybe I'll be lucky enough to see one of these rams again someday ;) .

Hope you enjoyed the pics.

Wow, thanks for sharing. That had to be pretty exciting to actually be apart of that. Awesome! :)

Great post and thanks for sharing with us.

Looks like the whole family got involved too!

Must have been a cool experience, especially with mature rams like that.

Very cool. Nice pics! Were they caught with a net from the helicopter or one of those rocket nets from the ground?

Thanks ;) . As we were targeting only mature rams these were all netted from the helicopter. They were then blindfolded, legs hobbled, and put in a "sack" and flown to the operations site. I'm trying to get the net gun job but something about training and the fact that everyone else in town wants to do it too is holding me back <_<

Thats friggin' cool!! THat would be something to experience! Although you had me going when you said sheep capture, took me back to the day of being back home on the Navajo! :P

Thanks for sharing such great pictures. I am actually going to try and help the Sheep Society on a tank project this year.

Fantastic! As a ADBSS member this was great to see, sheep on the mountain is our motto and these guys should help put many more out there. My friend and I have volunteered on many water projects and now I need to add a capture project to my "Bucket List". Thanks for sharing.
