jamaro Report post Posted January 14, 2010 Hey Everybody... I am TOTALLY confused... I am going to do some stink pig hunting and I need to cross a small section of the San Carlos to get to the area I want to hunt... I have personally seen a ton of drama with issues on the Jicarilla Res and I don't want to run into anything like that on the San Carlos... SOOO I called the San Carlos Game and Fish and they said I needed to come visit with the Director... Then I called the Mini Mart in Pima and they said I didn't need anything to just cross the rez Then I spoke to a few people and they said that I need to get a Recreation Permit.. Three different calls, three different answers?? Okay so what is the real deal??? Anybody know? J

willhunt4coues Report post Posted January 14, 2010 Little more detail. If you are coming in from New Mexico and going to travel a long ways through the Rez then Yes get a Predator tag for 1 day that will cover everthing you have gun bow if you stop to take a piss it will be all covered. So if you are traveling anywhere else just pick up a predator license and you will be fine and hey if you see a coyote or fox or bobcat you can nail him. But I am not going thru D so I should be okay... God Willing... J The only way that your allowed to enter unit D or any other "restricted" areas like R100. . 1. you have a valid Big-game tag in that unit. 2. you have a small-game permit accompanied with a tribal guide in unit D. 3. you have official business within the tribe to enter these areas. Traveling through these areas your at risk of getting stopped and citied. But traveling through R100 on route8 (1000rd) your okay ONLY if you stay on the hard top between posted areas with a valid SC hunting or fishing permit. If your gonna hunt lets say unit 28 or unit 27 and you find its more convient to travel thru the rez. You'll need a recreation permit to get to your destination and back. Remember this permit does not cover you to travel through "restricted" areas of D or R100.

Butters Report post Posted January 16, 2010 Just be careful I have hunted on the Res for a lot of years in the past. I can tell you that I have ran into the same situations many of times. I have read the regs, did it by the regs and had a Res warden tell me they were wrong. So I called the G&F office to ask about it and got a different answer, that had made three different answers in 30 minutes. The next day I went to their office got another answer, that lady got up from behind the counter to go do something and I started talking to another lady and got another answer, by this time I had five different answers in less than 24 hours. At that time I asked for someone in charge, when he came over to speak with me I told him about the five different answers that I have gotten, he didn't know what to say and he also didn't know the answer. All I can say is be careful, buy a permit and you should be fine. Also one year we were bear hunting in August and saw a Tribal Member take a Bull Elk so we called it in and they told us to mind our own business that they tolerate so much of it. In my opinion the Res has some of the best quality hunting and can be the most rewarding for their Trophy animals. Just buy a permit and all should be fine. Good luck on your hunt.
