Guest Ernesto C Report post Posted July 26, 2005 First hunterboy, welcome to greatest and coolest hunting web site. And second let me ask you: What game are you going to be hunting? You mentioned the 87 grain bullet,I'll say that thats a bullet strickly for varmint hunting and in my personal opinion not enough for deer or antelope at that distances you mentioned. If you are trying to hunt for coyotes, foxes and bobcats and do not want to make a lots of damage to the hide maybe the spitzer bullets form speer will help. The 257 Wby Mag is a super fast caliber but if you compare the 87 grain bullet on your 25-06 and on your 257,there is not that much difference, they are almost the same, about 3260 or so muzz.velocity;however if you use a 100 grain bullet on your 257 that will be very fast, faster than the 25-06 more than 3300+ muzz.velocity. If you are going to hunt big game such deer or antelope I personally recomend the 120 grain bullets. And I also recomend that you go out and enjoy your rifle and find out on your own if it really "blow a huge hole" and if it does and you dont like it let me know if you want to get rid of it because the 257 Wby Mag. is going to be my next coues gun. Hope this help and hope I cuold help you more and remember for those 350+ shots on deer, use the 120 grain.God bless,
Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 26, 2005 Welcome. Assuming that you are using factory ammo, I'd try the 120 Nosler Partition or the 115 Barnes X. Handloading, I'd still stick with the Partition, Barnes TSX, or Nosler Accubond.
hunterboy Report post Posted July 26, 2005 thanks Ernesto C. lol i dough i will get rid of this gun i am very fond of it. it is not a regular 257 wby mag it is a ruger m77 mark 11. originaly a 25-06 i have many gun smith freinds and some of them worked on it converting it to me they did the head spaceing and worke dont he bolt the gun shoots ver y well if you are interested in sometihng liekthat i would recomend it. thsi is the second gun i have had converd i had a 30-06 converted to a 240 wby mag used same bolt and all just got a new barrel and is shoots great to.. i talked to a guy that has a 257 wby he recomended 100 grain out of the 257 for whitetail deer the deer up here are about average going about a large mature buck is going about 200-230 and does aobut 145 160 lbs...i have a 243 and i would shoot them with 100 grain bulelt and they would run off i dropped to 87 and the drop inth ere tracks thats why i was tryin it same thing in my 25-06 so the 100 grain will stablize in the barrel better than the 87 is that what u were saying?,,,,, the barrel has 1:12 twist. im selling the 257 wby but i do have a 300 wby vangard with a murcurey supresor in it i paid 400 for it but the local gunshop offered me 1100 i think im gonan get rid of that one. jstu menching if your intrested.
