BigWave Report post Posted January 13, 2010 I'm considering giving up my Swaro STS 20-60x spotting scope if favor of a pair of Swaro 15's. Do you guys use both 15's AND a spotting scope with the tripod? Or are the 15's adequate for long range ID detail, etc. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! CouesWhitetail Report post Posted January 13, 2010 I use both, but not always. If I am backpack hunting, I usually ditch the spotting scope. It just depends on how far out you want to glass. If the area you hunt doesn't offer giant vistas, then you don't have to worry so much on the spotting scope. but if you are glassing farther out and will want to evaluate a buck, bring the scope too. I just recently traded my spotter for a pair of 15's and man I love em, it was definately a good decision for me anyways
Coues Sniper Report post Posted January 13, 2010 I use both, ALWAYS . The 15's are unbeatable for glassing, but not enough for detail at long ranges IMO.
couesnutt Report post Posted January 13, 2010 I had a chance this weekend to look threw a swaro spotter i wouldnt trade my 15's for one. My buddy that owned it said he hated it and thats coming from a guy that has killed deer and elk that most of us just dream about. So in my opinion if its to far for the 15's to see more than likely its to far to go after..
BigWave Report post Posted January 13, 2010 Thanks for the replies everyone! I'm trying to figure out which one I would be better off with. If I get the Swaro 15's, I'll have to sell the spotter. Cant swing the $2K for the new purchase without selling it. I'm thinking that the gamefinding potential of the 15's on the tripod will be of more value than having the spotter just for identification. I might regret it but I dont think I will. If you need a spotter to pick apart his antlers than most likely your alot choosier than most hunters with the 15's you can tell if he is a good buck and if your not sure just get closer to him I think you will definately like the 15's more than the spotter
Red Rabbit Report post Posted January 13, 2010 If you can swing $800, here is a pretty good deal on some 15X Kaibabs. Then you'd have the spotter and some nice 15s. http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...showtopic=17029

Are you currently using the spotter to glass or do you have some other binos? If you can only have the 15s or a spotter, I would definitely choose the 15s since you can use them so much more than a spotter. Amanda

Amanda Hi Amanda, I have Swaro 10x42 EL's for general glassing and just use the spotter to get a better look. I'm really leaning towards getting some 15's to use on the tripod while out in the hills and on a window mount when glassing from the truck. Thanks for all of the help! JLG Report post Posted January 13, 2010 I have both and use one carbon fiber tripod. I also have the Claw and the panhead and extra plates, that Cade sells with the Claw, I really love that panhead. If you can have only one I would go with the 15's, but if you can have both, I would get both and use both, I don't hunt without either one now. I did a sheep hunt in Dec. and the distances we were glassing were so far out that I probably used my spotter about 50 to 60% of the hunt. I would say, in other situations I have it out about 20% of the time, I would feel naked without it now, Take Care, JLG.
tjhunt2 Report post Posted January 13, 2010 If comes down to just one for sure then there is no question the 15's are the way to go. I would rather have the more expensive binos and a less expensive spotting scope than the other way around. You'll be spending way more time behind the binos.
