azhuntnut Report post Posted July 25, 2005 Well I got lucky this year and drew a 7m archery bull tag and want to get started scouting this weekend. I haven't spent much time in this area, so I don't know it very well. Does anybody know if there are some camping areas around the Mountainaire area? I am towing a 32ft fifth, so I will need plenty of space to turn around and park. I thought this would be a good spot to get started looking for the BIG one. Second question; Is there a place up by Flag that I can store my trailer and won't have to worry about it? I will probably leave it until the season is over. Thanks, David. Guest Ernesto C Report post Posted July 25, 2005 David,I herd before that in some areas of BLM and Forrest land (state) your trailer of fith wheel it has to be so many feet in length in order to be legal to travel into this areas.I dont know if this is true but you may want to check that or maybe some one in here can help you, maybe Diamonbackaz [/b] knows the answer. Congratulations on your tag and good luck on your hunt.
Dan H Report post Posted July 25, 2005 There is a large rv storage facility right outside of Flag on west side of road. You can see it from the highway. Kendrick park/peak area up route 180 is a good area to start. Seen lots of bulls in there. Dan
Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 26, 2005 David, Roads in 7m suitable to drag your 5th wheel would include A-1 Mtn Rd west of Flag off I-40, FR 222 off Hwy 180 past Snow Bowl turnoff, South on the FR700 off the Mountainaire road, Woody Mtn Road and out the water well road by the Arboretum. Check the yellow pages on-line www.dexonline.com for recreational vehicle storage in Flagstaff. There was a guy in Mountainaire who did storage, but not any more. Kendrick Park out Hwy 180 is on the 7E/W boundary, not in 7m, but a good spot to watch elk early morning come off Saddle Mtn or Whitehorse Hills. RR
KGAINES Report post Posted July 26, 2005 Doug can you still camp off A-1 mountain road, the last time I was up there it looked like they were starting a housing development in there, I hadn't been around there since the late 80's, but there used to be a lot of deer in that area. I think there are some places around mountainaire that you could camp, the last time I was up there when it was wet the roads were pretty bad, the guys that live up there might know better than me. David if I was you I would get up there and scout you out a few places to camp, and then you can also check into storage too, I can think of worse ways to spend a day or two. Sounds like a good problem to have.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 26, 2005 Keith, They do have a small housing development starting in the meadow just north of I-40 and A-1 Mtn Rd. Hook an immediate left and go west along the interstate for 1/2 mile or so and it'll turn north to A-1 Mtn and lots of places to drag a house and park it. They have done a lot of thinning and controlled burning in that area to reduce fire danger to the city of Flag. RR
oldboy Report post Posted July 26, 2005 I live in Kachina Village and drive out the 700 road all the time. A great place to camp with a big rig like yours is to take the Kelly Canyon Exit east bound off the freeway. About a mile up the road you will intersect at a "T" with the 700 road. travel south, (right hand turn) until you reach the 236 road, ther is a huge meadow there with alot of room for camping. I don't remember the road number, but just before the 236 road there is a right hand turn which will take you back to a more secluded meadow which is a little farther off the 700 road which is traveled very heavily. You can scout it and decide whether you want to beat your rig driving down it. We've had a few family reunions in there. A-1 Mountain road is still open for camping, just drive right on past the new development which is only about the first mile. Good luck on you hunt! I'd try any of the country back behind Mounaire and over towards Lake Mary Rd. A friend of mine really likes the area between A-1 Mountain and Fort Valley. It is a great tag. azhuntnut Report post Posted July 26, 2005 Thanks for all of the replys guys, this should really help me out on my quest for a big boy. I am going to head up there this weekend and try to get my camera set-up and drop some salt. I should be able to get at least six weekends of scouting in before my hunt. If anybody has anymore ideas, feel free to pass them along. Your help is greatly appreciated. David
