love2hunt Report post Posted July 24, 2005 Is there a explanation as to why only 30AB has leftover permits? I noticed that these units are given foot note 12 stating that access is limited. I'm not familar at all with the area but assume that it must be alot of private land . Is anyone familiar enough with the unit to give me some advice on where to start to look for a place to hunt. I decided I'll put in for the leftovers me and the bizzilions of others . Anyhunt is better then not going @ all even if its in unfamiliar territory.
COUESAZ Report post Posted July 24, 2005 I had a huge thing typed up and hit ESC and wiped it all out. I drew a tag this year for 30B and will not use it. It was my last choice. I was born and raised in that unit. I killed a 180 class mule deer when I was 12 In that unit I am now 33. I have seen about 5 bucks in that unit that would hit that mark. None of them are still around. That area was hit hard by drought, Lions, And hunters. I hope it is on a rebound. The area West of the dragoons is owned by some dude that calls him self a rancher. He has tried sub deviding most of that area over and over again. With no luck. I hope he can't keep it much longer. If it ever comes open again you will see me out there because I know3 for a fact that he still has some record book deer on it. ( He cant keep all washes closed)!!!!! I have not hunted on it in years. It used to be known as the horse ranch. Any way there are some couse in that are as well that can be hunted but the access is hard there to. You can hunt south of there and run into lots of land closed. If you hunt most of that area you have to hike in and stay and hunt from a pack camp. I saw two very nice bucks taken that way last year. I will not say were or by who as the guy uses this forum and would probably not be happy with that. He has more bucks on his wall than me and must put the time in to his hunts as well. The unit can be the hardest hunt you could ever go on but also the most gradifying if you tag out.

COUESAZ Report post Posted July 25, 2005 No problem. I used the trailer in new mexico a few weeks ago and it worked great. It was funny we thought we would be the only ones with one in the family and when we showed up there was already 6 of them there. All around the same year as well. It will work nice during the elk hunt. The kids call it THE CABIN.What did you draw.
bullwidgeon Report post Posted July 25, 2005 FWIW I know some dudes that got the leftover permits last year in I want to say 30A. They ended up killing a deer or two but did not put in for there again this year even though they knew it would be a sure draw. I guess they really were not impressed enough to "waste" a bonus point on the unit/hunt again. I do not know where they were at and I didn't want to know. If it is not worth "wasting" a bonus point on then I probably do not need to see and punish myself in that country. Also, at the time, New Mexico was giving tags away to any goofball who had $190 in his pocket and as everyone knows, just about every other juniper tree in New Mexico has a whopper sleeping under it. 111 Report post Posted July 26, 2005 Don't care about 30A/B, just wondering if they take your bonus points on left over permits? Can't believe none of you are after the 7M archery cow elk leftover permits.

Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 26, 2005 Page 54 in the regs. R12-4-107 BONUS POINT SYSTEM "An applicant issued a first-come hunt permit-tag under R12-4-114©(2)(d) after the computer drawing does not lose bnus points for that species, and a valid but unsuccessful applicant for a first-come hunt permit-tag remaining after the computer drawing does not gain a bonus point." nothing to lose by trying, but a hunt to gain.
