Casey I'am 100% with you on this one......I would never hunt any of the southern units without a handgun with me.....Oh ya and a shovel

Why carry a pistol when you are holding a high powered rifle?? I guess if you are bow hunting I see a problem since you can't carry any fire arm. I am not worried about the hunting part, I am worried about the camping part, the pistol would be good to have under the pillow...Most of these people will leave you alone including the smuglers since they don't like attracting attention to themselves.

I also drew a 36B late tag and have some concern for some of the safety issues. I am a Deputy Sheriff and used to work the area between Gila bend and Ajo. So I have dealt with my share of drug runners and illegal aliens. It has been my experience that the illegal aliens want bother you unless they need food or water. On the other hand the drug runners can be pretty ruthless. As some of you suggested stir way clear of them. The main thing is use common sense and you should not have a problem.

I am new to the forum and excited to start talking hunting with all you guys.

The October hunt should be when you have to worry the least because there are so many more hunters. The later hunts are when you really need to be a lot more aware. It's just like everybody has been sayin' to just use common sense and good judgement.

Thanks for all the help! I haven't been on line lately, I've had a remodeling project go horribly astray! I appreciate the advice, and now I can concentrate on deciding what areas I should scout first.

Archery deer is OTC, but archery javelina has a draw for permits. Applications for spring hunts like javelina and turkey will likely be due Oct. 11. I believe the spring regulations are being set this weekend in Flagstaff at the commissioners' meeting.
