It is difficult to give you the advice on where to hunt since I don?t know what type of terrain or vegetation that you like to hunt in, or how you hunt. Some people might like to hunt big mountains with big canyons, and others may like to hunt rolling hills. Some might like to hunt the thick oak and manzanita, and some may like open areas with ocotillo and mesquite. It all depends on your personal preference. Some people like to sit and glass while others hike and jump them. The only thing that I can tell you is to get maps, and get out and drive and find where you can get into and where you can?t, access is a big issue. Find areas that look good to you and meet your hunting style. Get out and hike and glass a little. Getting into more difficult areas will usually mean fewer hunters to deal with. I believe deer can be found all over and most large canyons will have deer in them. I have seen white tail in areas where you wouldn?t think they are.

Hunted there 2 yrs ago. Pretty good unit -- saw lots of does-- two small bucks.( could only hunt 2 days--Didn't do enough scouting ) . I would start scouting out FR287-- FR 287a. Drew 24a this year. Looking foward to do some serious scouting this year!! Good Luck :)

Try the golf course in Gold Canyon. I have seen several deer back in there. I do alot of work in GC and residents there tell me that bucks are found browsing on the greens in the mornings from time to time. I carried my bow with me this last January but never found one during archery season.

The AZGFD website suggests possible areas north of superior. Unfortunately the Peachville fire (1800 acres) is burning a boatload of forest right now, exactly where they suggest to try... 5 miles north of superior. This area is really overhunted anyway IMHO! Tons of locals from the area camp and hunt there. Some are not too careful about hunting, but are out there just to party. Just Too many unpredictable hunters for my likes.

Fire info....

PEACHVILLE (1,800 acres, 5% contained) is 4 miles north of Superior and burning in Tonto National Forest. Roadblocks are in place on Forest Roads 234, 650, and 8. The fire is moving into Superstition Wilderness. The town of Superior, local mines, and a power substation have been secured. Crews are burning out, patrolling the line, and mopping up. For more information, call Tonto National Forest at (602)-225-5200.

You might try the pinto mine road. Go through the mine (escort requires at times) and across the small bridge, then take a look at the canyons to the west. Some good deer can even be found in and aroud the mine. I have also seen good deer in this unit coming from the roosevelt lake side. pick a FR and head south up toward the mountains from the apache trail.

Most anywhere is good in the unit. Muley or WT can be found in virtually the same areas.

I saw a muley in the Queen valley area one time that was just HUGE. My father in law was with me and he saw it first at about 75 yards, Just standing. He said it was as big as his horse (buckskin quarterhorse). I don't think it was that big, but it was close!

A few more notes unit, IT IS RUGGED. Plan on wearing out ONLY a pair of boots if you are lucky, and your feet if you are unlucky. There are some deer in the 90" class but very very few a lot bigger than that so don't go out expecting a monster.

Get out and scout it yourself and be surprised. You will find a good spot I am sure!

good Luck

AZ4life , NO offense taken but I happen to be a local and I think you might be mistaken. I hunt 24B and know almost everyone that hunts there from Superior, and I have yet to see a local bypass safety. But you are correct about one thing, 24B north of Superior is highly over hunted.I could see the peachville fire from my house and by the looks of things I don't think many hunters will be hunting there this year. "now Pinto valley ,thats another story"

Good Luck Muskrat.

That area is pretty close to home fro you isn't it? Lots of day trips for scouting should make it easy!

thanks az4life - too be honest, I'm not sure where I'll be hunting. JLG from the other boards offered to take me out and has a place in mind. The unit is pretty close to home. In the past I've poked around Queen Valley, but haven't seen any deer yet. I saw a lot of lion tracks though. I'm pretty excited all the way around. My plan so far is:

Sept - 22 Bear

Nov - 6A Bull, then a 24B Mulie

Jan - Archery Javelina and Coues

Maybe I'll pull off an "Arizona mini-slam" this year :P
