Rattling and decoys

Recommended Posts

There are two things that are in your control. If these two things are not right to the best of your knowledge, then its your own fault! :P

"Location" is one of the most important things! If there are no deer to call in then your just gonna get in some good practice at trying not to make your knuckles bleed.

But once you have the "Location" the most important is the "Setup". What are you trying to do with the deer? Get him into bow range or rifle range? If you can see across the canyon to a buck then he can see you. If he thinks he can see all he needs to see from where he's at then he has no reason to keep coming in cause your not a deer right. There is no one way to do it but think of it this way,"He is going to come in tell he can see or determine whats up". If he can figure you out from a distance then thats your fault not his.

Some times this is hard to do in an area you don't know like the back of your hand.

Like any calling, some animals just don't care or won't care tell "their" situation is just right. And some animals will come right in no matter what you do. We all like those kind! ;)

There is a ton of write ups and videos out there to explain how to call and rattle. The subject has been beat to death, just know that Yes, Mule deer and Coues deer can be called in!

The best thing you can do to learn how to call them or rattle them is to hear them call and watch them fight! There is no one way to do it. But experience will help you to know how and when to change it up!

not a dexter the expert on calling but I've rattled in one Coues buck(Oct.), and had muley does come into a fawn distress and just doe bleats. Also had allot of use simply stopping dear with a series of " maah" mouth calls wether their spooked or not, or just one " maah" does it sometimes. Calling them in though especially in our rut is supposed to be a treat and a wheel of fortune, gotta try it if I make it out, works some in the early months and I heard now is really productive, Especially if your tied to a tree trying to stay awake and stay warm and keep your hopes up. ;) . They say calling in the muley does' with the distress, dureing the rut, brings the bucks in right with them  ?

What about decoys? anyone "decoyed in a deer?" in AZ? thought that would be fun to try, with a stuffed real cape  .

I always agree with Lance! Set up is everything. I have called in some bucks by just breaking sticks in a dead tree or rubbing a stick on stones when I am running and gunning bucks. Never called in any deer with a grunt tube. Antelope sure like them though.

Ps.

Dustin I heard about a big buck taken in the unit you were talking about with CRB. I think it could be the one you and CRB were talking about. I will see if I can get a picture.

I've seen some bombers that have been taken with rattles and bleats. These guys were at the peak of the rut. No personal success yet using these tactics, but I know they work if you get in the right location and do it correctly. No idea on the decoys. I've yet to fool an elk with a montana decoy, so I'm too skeptical to try them on coues.
