Question on Bowhunting turkeys

Recommended Posts

I have never really chased after turkey. Some people say that after you shoot one with a bow to chase it down, others say to sit still.

Which do you do and why?

That is a great question that I unfortunately can't answer. I do have another question to add to it which is; where is the best place to aim to harvest a turkey with a bow?

Ive always thought the hip for aiming. They cant run or fly then. I certainly would go chasin a turkey with an arrow in it. Ive only shot one w/ archery tackle. hip shot at 35 yards or so. didnt go far. I didnt chase that one cuz i had a buddy who was busy missin.

Head on, shoot 'em right where the beard starts ( or in the fall, right where the beard should start ;) )

Broadside, in the wing butt

Strutting, very fluffy, easy to miss. Wait till they face away from you and shoot 'em right up rear end, makes a nice target :P .

Key is to hit the spine, somehow.

Shoot a big expandable, or specialty turkey head, you don't want a pass through. I hunt with a Magnus stinger 4 blade, with a "small game stopper" behind it.

Or buy a Guiilotine broadhead, and clip their head off  !

As soon as the arrow connects, run like heck and tackle the bird! Watch out for your broadhead!

the shot through the top of the drums or the wing butt on a broadside turkey. An inch below the beard on a chest on turkey. Center of the back on a facing away bird, but make sure they are upright.

I use BIG mechanicals and wait after the shot. they usually dont go far.

I always shoot right for the vitals and I usually retrieve it fairly quick. That's what works for me.

I have harvested two with my bow. I aimed for the center of both and ended up hitting the hip on one and the wing and hip on the other. I took off running after both with the first one only going 5 yards. The second one I ran down in about 50 yards, it must of looked funny this fat boy chasing a turkey down  .
