GREAT day for mearns

Recommended Posts

Didn’t think I was going to be able to make it out today with being right in the middle of finals at the UofA but I got my priorities straight and decided to head down south. My dad and I found this spot last year when the bird #s were high and I have wanted to get back out there to see what this year would bring. This area is mearns hunter’s paradise, gentle rolling hills and relatively open as well, and lots of birds of course. Right out of the truck my shorthair, running like he’s running for his life, comes to a screeching halt and lots up on point, ONE bird gets up and I hit it but was a little nervous because I was thinking maybe someone else had been in there and had shot up all the birds. But I was presently suppressed. My shorthair, Dewey, locks up hard on two other 8+ bird coveys in about 15min time. About 8-9 coveys later in 3 hours my dad and I had our limits. One of my best days quail hunting ever. Plenty of birds and GREAT dog work. Dewey came alive this trip and my other pup, Ginger, also did well. This trip was the first time I have seen them honor each other’s points and they did plenty of that. I've limited out in a shorter time but the dog work made the day. AWESOME day mearns hunting regardless of being a slow year. Also found a desent coues set to boot.

On a side note and give you all a lot more understanding on what I have had to deal with dewey. I was out hunting last weekend and left him in the kennel in the truck, came back a couple hour later and this is what I found. it had a cover on it at the time which he was also able to sqeez through. Found him just down the road hunting with other member of our party. I think he stayed by the truck until he herd the other guys shooting. Sometimes that dog is a handfull and I and to kill him but today he earned his keep and I think i'll keep him around a little longer.

Awesome pics. Looks like you guys had a great day. Thanks for sharing!

when I was archery elk hunting in November, I was running into mearns all the way up to 7500' in the grassy areas. Dang things exploded right out from under my feet and about gave me a heart attack. ;)

Looks like you had a fine day! Its been pretty tough this year for sure. It seems like some areas had a hatch and some didn't this year. I have been out a ton and have heard very few shots fired besides the people I am hunting with.

Nice hunt and those are some nice looking dogs! I would love to see a few pointing shots if you got em.

I have one pic of my little Star I am really proud of this year.100_3306.jpg

i think it would be fun to do a CW mearns trip with all our dogs, but unfortunatley i dont think i would be able to do one this year because of pig season, unless it was the last weekend, or i got my pig early, what do you all think?

cha-ching! thanks for sharing the stroy and pics. i have to laugh because i have a female just like that if you try to leave her in camp you better have her tied down with logging chain as she does not like to be left while the other go hunting...lol

Great hunt - especially this year. Not alot of quail out there. I did manage a mixed bag a few weeks ago, with some gambles and scalies.
