huntingfool Report post Posted December 11, 2009 Casey misread his schedule I guess and had today off, so I ditched school and we went out to the same area to see if we could find any leftovers. Casey's friend Chad also came with us. It was a cold morning with a good frost. First 3 stands were dry. The magic happened on the fourth stand. We set up in some thick stuff, Casey and I sitting next to each other and Heavy Drop about 20 yards on the flank. We're packing shotguns and Chad had his 30-30. So we set the scorpion to lucky bird and set. About two minutes in a see a white face coming hard at maybe 60 yards thru the brush, so I didn't move but just clicked off the safety. Casey heard that and looked over. As I did that I could see more movement behind the first dog and thought "double"! As the first dog cleared the bushes in front of us I thought "I'm gonna let her go by and get the second one, maybe we'll get 'em both." Sure enough that first dog came screaming in, and her mate was about 20 yards behind her. As soon as he came into the clear I locked onto him, letting him get as close as possible, and figured I'd open up when Casey did. When the first dog got about 10 yards from us he opened up on her, and I swung on the second one. He was still charging hard after Casey shot and a spilt second later I put it on his face and let some #4 buck fly. He went down but popped right up and kept coming! I shot again and missed and heard Chad shoot and saw dirt fly just behind him. He veered to my left in between me and Chad, dragging his hind leg (not sure how I hit him there), and when he cleared behind us I got a good bead on his head and put him down. From the time I first saw that dog until the shooting was over I bet was less than ten seconds, those dogs were SCREAMING. Must've not ate for a couple days. Anyway hope all that made sense, I'm still shaking just writing it down! Amazing, I've never had them come in that hard. That was my first shotgun dog and a first double for both of us, man what a ride. Incredible day. Last 3-4 stands were dry except a few mulies (one spike). But that double was a day-maker, I'll have a big smile on my face for a long time. We'll try to get some pictures up later of the set-up. Here's us being He-roes.
