bobbyo Report post Posted December 4, 2009 This is sort of a continuation from another thread. But here is the question: WHAT IS THE MINIMUM SIZE COUES OR CARP YOU ARE WILLING TO BURN YOUR TAG ON DURING THE FIRST MONTH OF THE SEASON? Usually my goal is a branched antlerd buck in either coues or carp. I like hunting both, but this year is different. I have seen a couple coues that will probably go B.C. and C+S has inspired me with his determination. So I'm going to state it here. I will take one of these bucks or nothing. No forky with charachter for me. Bob p.s. in case your wondering where these bucks are. Unit 23! of coarse.

Guest 300ultramag. Report post Posted December 4, 2009 B&C isnt suitable for coues IMO a 3 yo spindley 3x with 2 inch g1s has a great possibilty of scoring better then a 5 yo massy bruiser with better tine length overall w/ extra junk. To me anything over the 5yo mark is a trophy, due to the fact that with public land hunts these deer are hit pretty hard... I cant wait for a new scoring system
CRB Report post Posted December 4, 2009 You know what the difference between 100 and 110. 10 inches. 5 inches a side. Big wow! People start obsessing about monster bucks and scouting them and baby sitting them, keeping a code of silence. The worst of human emotions becomes evident. Those one's that are against the commandments. Like do not covet thy neighbors rack! Really if you can keep it all positive. Keep jealousy and greed out of the equation good for you. If you can honestly shake a hunters hand that just shot "your monster buck" then I say you have a good balance. There is the other side. We have heard the stories. The sick ones. splitting the skull for a few points here. Knocking a point off there for a bigger net score. Kicking the wrong deer off the cliff because you thought he was the one. Shooting a deer a week early while your best hunting buddy lie in the hospital. I use to think, that I would like to be a trophy hunter. The challenge of it appeals to me, but the competitiveness of it sickens me. I don't just mean competitiveness between hunters. I mean the competitiveness within the mind. The thought that a 111 inch buck could some how be superior to a 109 inch buck is nonsense. The concept of ground shrinkage is a joke. "I swore he was 115, but he only taped out to 105, so I am disappointed." What? So I have given up my trophy hunting aspirations a while a go. The ironical thing is I shoot larger animals now, when I truly don't care. I hunt for fun and fun only. If it is no longer fun I will quit. Going back to Scott's original post. I would be proud to put my tag around an 86 inch whitetail. I would never pass it up. So my answer to the question "What contributes most to harvesting MONSTER BUCKS." My answer would have to be. WHY? Bob Your exact post!
FlyingW Report post Posted December 4, 2009 If you are talking first hunt of the year (January) it would have to be 100" Coues & 160" Mule Deer for me .

bobbyo Report post Posted December 4, 2009 Boy's you are not answering the question! Of coarse trophy hunting is evil, but hunting a particular one. Man vs. deer is divine. That is the ultimate in deer hunting. Whether it is a trophy buck or not. Believe me neither of these bucks will be my white whale and if one of my buddies ground checks them. I will be the first to shake their hand. If I am so lucky to get one of these bucks it will not go in any book and I won't all of a sudden become an arrogant sob. Well maybe a little. If you think I'm a hypocrite than flame away. I'm a big boy, I can take it. But at least answer the question. What will you burn your tag on? Also 300 ultra mag I have seen so called book deer in other species that fit your description, but I don't ever remember a 110 inch coues that was spindley and ugly. Anyway I'm sure you will be pleased with the mass if i can get an up close picture. Well i have jinxed myself enough. Hello forky. Bob
CRB Report post Posted December 4, 2009 My answer to the ? is I had tag soup on my november hunt because I was after one buck in particular and he is a toad azantlerhead seen him once and I seen him 3 times hes pushing 130 and I passed up 29 bucks in 7 days because I wanted him. obviously He lives on but I'll see him again
cpugsie Report post Posted December 4, 2009 January numbers would be 85" Coues, 150" Muley! I don't want to end my hunting too soon. I like being out there.

WHY? Bob Your exact post! All I can say is that guy you quoted is a good writer! I'm glad it affected you enough to remember it. I still stand by what is written and the only thing that is outright hypocritical in my quest is the," passing 86" line. As you obviously know you can't shoot the big one if you shoot the 86"er. I just hope i have the determination to pass 29 bucks. That will be an ongoing debate in my head. CRB I wish you luck on your deer. In addition CRB can I ask you a favor. You are welcome to criticize my ever changing thoughts all you want. Just next time can you not yell at me in size 48 red font. Thanks, Bob
bowhuntaz1 Report post Posted December 4, 2009 Well I'm not after numbers. I'm after steak and roasts. I have never measured any of my deer. Dont know how and dont want to. To answer the question... I will shoot a 3x3 coues or a 4x4 muliey or better if I get the chance.
Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted December 4, 2009 Bravo Bob! I'm glad I inspired you to desire! It is good to set goals.... Last year my hunting partner Jason and I both swore to each other... 100"er or Nothing! .... He took a 105" gross buck and I a 101" gross buck. We were stoked!!! It was the first time we both met our goals in the same month.... he and I are content to hunt 10-20 days in January and never draw a bow because we both know that we can't shoot a monster if we drop the hammer on a good buck. Keep in mind this is all realative to the individual hunter.... I have 6 coues with a bow and the largest is 108"+ gross and Jason has 4 and the largest is 109"+.... Years ago our goal was: "a good racked buck", then 90"er.... etc. Not that I haven't gone to the woods in the state of mind that I want to kill the first racked buck I see today regaurdless of my previously set goals and then come home with bloody arrow and a good buck! This was one of those days! This Year...... 2010: Coues..... 110" or Nuthin', Baby!!! (If I misjudge a buck and he is 10 inches smaller I will not regret it one bit... How can you regret a 100"er!! But, I've never misjudged a coues by 10" on a bow hunt) Carp.... If I had the opportunity to hunt any...... I'd draw my bow on any buck that might make 150"! And if it was only 140" I'd still be tickled cuz I don't have one yet!!
WFGinNM Report post Posted December 4, 2009 I hunt to be happy, if I wake up happy, hunt with good friends, and bust my butt. I let the animal at the time dictate if I shoot or not. I hunt Coues' to soak up the experience (and not have to carry out something that weighs more than me). I don't know that I could hunt Coues' and say " it's for the meat", there isn't that much meat (although it's darn good). I do know that the next time I hunt Coues' it WILL be for a nice typical. Until it steps out in front of me I'll go with that. --Bill
Snapshot Report post Posted December 4, 2009 To me, the trophy is in the hunt. I hunt for a good time and to enjoy the spirit of the wild. If I take an 80" buck, fine, if I take a 120" buck, then a little braggin rights don't hurt either
Becker Report post Posted December 4, 2009 I myself try and top my biggest deer to date. I don't have the need to kill just to kill. I almost get more joy out of just seeing deer in the wild and being able to observe their habits. If you pinned me down I would have to say something that I thought was 115 or better to get me to pull the trigger these days. Like posted before you cant shoot the big ones if you kill the smaller ones. Even if it is the last day!!!!!
