jaycee85501 Report post Posted December 2, 2009 My boy and I killed some bulls , we went up on Tuesday last week a few days before the hunt set up camp and scouted. We went to the place where we had seen bulls before, and yes there were bulls there. In fact there were 4 bulls together. 2 6x6 1 5x broken and a 4x4. so we watched them through our spotting scope(thank god for swvorski) we could see for a long ways off any ways Thursday afternoon went in and scoped them out again in the same place and bedded them down. Friday morning gone, they were gone like a fart in the wind never seen the bulls again. (i thought it was a done deal). So we had to go back and start all over hit the maps and went back to work. We got snow on Saturday night, Sunday morning we hunted in snow all day. So we decided to hit an area called padre canyon found a hill that had elk sign all over it and started glassing. We would find elk all day the 1st one was a big 6x6 but it was so thick we could not get a shot; we waited for him to come out but never did. In all we saw 8 bulls on the hill. So we went to another area found a bedded bull nice 5x5 making a stock on him and wouldn't you know something spooked him he jumped up and again we could not get a shot. so now we are heading back to camp freezing we checked one more area before dark and BAM there they were a heard of about 20 elk running my boy who is a running back on the football team grabbed his gun and took off after them. Me and my brother said there is no we could catch him let him go. soon after that we heard a shot, then another i looked at my brother and we started to scramble as we got over to my boy his elk was dead (spike), he said Dad yours just ran down that canyon, as i got to the edge of the canyon wouldn't you know there he was a (spike) about 325 yards away walking slow i sat down put the sticks up and let it go with the 300 win mag, as my brother was watching he said i hit him and watched him go down. But then he jumped up and took off again i hit him one more time and watched him go down (I thought). Now we have 2 bulls down. my boy went and started gutting his alone (O yea its dark and raining now),we had to GPS my boys elk, thank god my brother did not loose his like i lost mine(lol) so we get to the area where i last seen him go down found blood and tracks but no bull. so we kept looking and looking and no elk. Looked for 1\2 hour. my boy called us on the radio and said he was done so we went to help him get the elk on the ATV trailer. got out of the area gave the elk to the wife's who waited for us to go find mine. as we got back to the last blood sign we started the search, and my boy was the one who found him still alive....... about 100 yard from where we had last blood sign. so i approached him and killed the elk. We gutted him in snow and rain got back to camp hung them skinned them and to bed at 3 am we had lots of fun now we have meat for a year or 2 LOl. O yea i told my boy to run the football like he was chasing elk (lol) because he was moving.
