elkhunter Report post Posted December 2, 2009 The year started off with some scouting and some nice bucks being located. Our hunt started Saturday morning with a steep hike up the mountain in the dark and we glassed for a few minutes then a buck was located prior to shooting light, I quickly moved closer around a ridge and the buck was still feeding in the same spot, I got setup and pulled the trigger at 232 yards and that was the last meal for the buck. Funny thing is this is a buck we had planned for my dad to take, it was my fault but I'm very proud of him! The rest of saturday did not reveal any bucks and Sunday was a blow down, no bucks seen, funny how you find them everywhere scouting during other people's hunt but you can't find them on your hunt. Monday came and a few small bucks were seen but no BOOM yet, dad passed them on. Tuesday Dad started to get itchy trigger finger. We set up for glassing, found 3 bucks right away...moved closer....buck is 250 yards behind a cactus, we wait....buck moves..behind a tree...we wait....buck beds down no shooting lane...we wait...bucks stand up and run out of the country...we're very confused.....2 new bucks came around the corner spooking the bedded bucks...yay! I told dad it's a forkhorn and a spike and he said "pffth what's the range boy?" I told him 242 yards and gave him a thumbs up and BOOM that was lights out for his forkhorn, the shot was 31 degree angle uphill, he made a great shot! It was a great and fun hunt, both bucks were taken at 6700 and 6600 ft in elevation and we got to hunt in snow for a day, I'm glad we won't have to hike those mountains for some time now.
