DesertBull Report post Posted July 11, 2005 i keep tellin' you fellers that the only thing that works is to learn how to work the wind.? scentlock stuff is crap.? put it in the same box as "field dressing kits". "cough silencers" and 7mm/08's and chunk em in the dumpster.? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Don't be dissin' the 7mm/08 sucka!
coues addict Report post Posted July 11, 2005 I totally agree with Lark on the sentlock stuff. I have been inside of twenty yards of several Coues deer with the wind right and I think guys buy that stuff and then think they can ignore the wind and ''Just hunt''. It just doesn`t work that way most of the time and I think most everyone realizes that! I don`t know sh_t about the 7mm/08 though! I really like GMM`s cover sent idea though, I was always rolling in the mud when I was a kid too! It will probably make me feel like a kid again. I wonder if the hills will not seem so steep! Just my .02 cents Coues Addict

Dan H Report post Posted July 12, 2005 Never purchased any scent lock clothing myself. What really happens to that new charcoal stuff once you wash it? Does it really last? The forhead pouring sweat and not wiping it on your sleeves is the hard part after conquering a hill. Or even worse the rim of the hat getting soaked. I usually break green off junipers etc, and rubb the heck out of them into my clothes as I'm walking or when sitting. It's called Cedar lock. Good topic, because we all know we smell like shoot to deer in one way or another. Of course some deer probably have better eye sight and think man that dudes been beat with ugly caliber stick.. newbee Report post Posted July 12, 2005 HERES's some thing else.. I just saved a bunch of money on my ... Hunting gard. In retro spec I bet a nbc suit would work for a bit of time
runningbird Report post Posted July 12, 2005 I bought a sent loc suit in about 98 or 99, I thought it helped, it was one of the older types. you were suposed to put in the dryer on high heat for an hour to reactivate the charcole. I do know the couple times I washed it the water was black from the charcole, so it probabley all washed away now... I really don't know if it made a difference or not. I was able to get close to some animals but I was still always trying to keep the wind in my favor.... on a related or mabey not subject has anyone ever noticed deer or elk not being afraid of kids or thier sent. I'll never forget huntin in Utah with my 2 boys 4&5 at the time kind of sittin in a blind, I turn around to see the 2 of them havin a blast peein all over a tree. well of course i was put out and we left the spot only to come back by the next morning to find 3 forky's lickin the tree like crazy??? BASS Report post Posted July 12, 2005 So where are we now? Throwing scent lock suits away, rolling in dirt, and letting kids pee on us? Yeah, that's about right. But on the same subject, when I was about eight or nine I was "hunting" with my dad. We stopped, and layed down when a herd came over a hill towards us. I layed down on my back, with my head resting on a log, and my dad hid behind the other side of the log. The next thing we knew there was a cow elk smelling my shoe. I opened my eys all the way up, and it never seemed to bother her at all. She then just walked away. When my dad tried to get a shot off, the herd spooked, but that made the whole trip. Also, does anyone remember a long time ago the young boy who got lost between Woods Canyon, and Chevlon Lake? For those who don't a little boy got lost while camping up there. He was found a few days later, and kept saying that "santa's reindeer took care of him." He slept where, and when the "reindeer" slept, and ate what they ate. Besides being a little bumped, and bruised he was fine. No one knew what the heck he was talking about until they showed him a picture of a Bull Elk, and he said that it was one of the reindeer that took care of him. DesertBull Report post Posted July 12, 2005 Sounds like the kid might of ate a few handfuls of peyote!
TREESTANDMAN Report post Posted July 13, 2005 Now I'm starting to wonder about carbon blast/cover scents etc. I wonder if that stuff even helps.
BASS Report post Posted July 15, 2005 well wouldn't it be "new" each time you put it on? I still think anyone who bought their sales pitch hook line and sinker is a 100% sucker. Nothing is going to make a bowhunter 100% smell free.
grizzly Report post Posted July 15, 2005 Hey Bass I saw that story on the PAX network a few years ago. They used to have a show called Miracles, or something to that extent. I seemed to remember that it was in Idaho or Utah, but they found the prints in the snow where the boy had slept and it showed an elk body wrapped around his. It kept him warm through the night and then left. Kinda makes you think twice about shootin one cause it may be the one!?! Or maybe its just one of them urban legends. BASS Report post Posted July 15, 2005 It might have been Idaho, that's where I heard about it, but when I asked an old timer up in the Forest Lakes area he swore that it was up near Chevlon. Oh well, that's what I get fo listening to some punk old man.
reddog Report post Posted July 15, 2005 I think we all agree that we can't completley cover our scent or even elininate our outline. But if using the lastest camo or the most high tech cover/elimination scent control can buy you even a extra 2-3 seconds it could mean the difference in taking an animal and eating tag soup. On another note, when are tags out?!?!?
