GRONG Report post Posted July 9, 2005 Read this and tell what you think. Sounds very legitimate to me but I'm a sucker. http://www.fastestbows.com/articles/corrigan/scent_suits.htm
Redman Report post Posted July 9, 2005 Sounds correct, I have read some studies performed by biologist at CSU using dogs and they found humans wearing scent eliminating clothing just as quickly as those not wearing them. I may be wrong on this point, but I believe deer have a better sense of smell than dogs. I think the best thing a hunter can do to limit his smell is to shower daily, avoid scented deodorant and detergents, oh and keep the wind in favor. BASS Report post Posted July 9, 2005 So I spent $9000 on an outfit for nothing. This makes me glad that those prices kept me away.
GRONG Report post Posted July 9, 2005 Same here BASS, I was getting all saved up for a good suit for this fall's hunts. Looks like I'll use it on something else now.
Grey Hawk Report post Posted July 9, 2005 Good stuff, not going to purchase a suit now, I'll stick with scent free products until something or someone conducts some tests on this stuff and comes back with the facts.....
Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 10, 2005 Bass, I will sell ya my leafy wear scent lock suit for 10 cents on your dollar- only $900 . I would imagine that a lot of our scent comes from our breath, and this would be difficult to contain. Not to mention that those suits are hot and make one sweat more, even just sitting in a blind during early archery season. As an aside, there is an effective deodorant called Pit Stop that is applied as a thick paste and lasts several days. Doug~RR
JOsdieck Report post Posted July 10, 2005 For the most part, I agree that they are gimmicks, but if you find a good deal (almost impossible) I'd still say pick one up. If you read the article, then click on message boards at the bottom, one of the discussions is titled "scent suits don't fool dogs", or something like that. Read that article and you might disagree that scent suits don't fool dogs. There were forty something search and rescue dogs used in the experiment and it took them on average about 40 seconds longer to find the people wearing scent control garments. This time was plugged into an equation that showed it to be not significantly differant, but it's something to think about. Even more importantly, there was an average distance of the dogs having to be 10 yards closer to get a whiff of the people wearing the scent protecting garment. While ten yards isn't far, we all know it can make a world of differance while bow hunting. The article says the garment doesn't work because the people wearing them were still found, but the extra seconds and closer distances are at least enough to make me scratch my head Personally, I think the biggest differance you get with a scent garment is that the material is thicker and has more texture than cotton. If I pick up my scent block face mask, and pick up my duck hunting face mask, activated carbon aside, the scent blocker sure feels like it would be tougher for reek to flow through. My dad was in Cabelas last year and one of the 150 suits had been dragged under a wheel while on a rack. There was a little hole and they gave him the thing for 15 bucks. That's a rare find for sure, but if you have to buy a pair of new hunting pants or a jacket anyway, I'd pay an extra 20 bucks for an extra ten yards! -Joe
Guest Ernesto C Report post Posted July 10, 2005 That's why I posted many times before, you must hunt naked and of course whatch the wind direction specially if you eat a lots of frijoles (beans) the nigth before, it has to be all natural because soaps and detergents had all this chemicals to make us smell good specially around the two leged deer Thanks for the info Josh. Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 10, 2005 Ernesto, I was archery deer hunting for coues in 6B a few years ago with a friend. He was sitting a trick tank along the rim, and along comes some hippy long-hair... nekked as a jay bird . He was the guy that manned the fire lookout a mile away. We have called the tank Naked Boy Tank since. RR

galiuro mountain man Report post Posted July 11, 2005 I dont use scent lock suits, but I have found a good way for scent elimination. Right after I arrive to where I start walking to where I hunt I find a little loose dirt and roll in it. Every now and then you might hit a cow pie, but it is just a stronger cover scent. If I sweat while walking up a hill, I do it again. All of my friends use the sprays, and think I am nuts, but I get deer and they dont. I sold my dad on the idea last year and he also tagged out. I dont know if it really works, but I have a feeling it does. Another good thing about it is it dulls out your camo, brand new camo wont shine like it normally does, it usually takes a few good washes to get rid of the shine. This year I might even try a small mud hole to roll in. If it dont help with scent, maybe the sun wont feel as hot. GMM
BASS Report post Posted July 11, 2005 mountain man, I have heard of people doing like you do. I have also heard of them showing up early (maybe like thursday) and actually digging a hole for their clothes to sit in until Friday. I tried a similar approach, I put my clothes in a large garbage bag, and then put some dirt from my hunting area in the bag too. For the entire week before the hunt I just give the bag a few shakes, and let it sit some more. But I have no idea if it works or not. What else do y'all use? I use somekind of scentless soap, and also use a cover scent. I think I will try a leaf suit instead this year, but it will not have the little scent lock logo on it, as that add another $
grizzly Report post Posted July 11, 2005 I have two sets of Scentlok, I bought them both on ebay and didnt pay that much so Im not too upset if they dont really work. I always wash everything in baking soda and take a baking soda field bath before I leave for the field. I think there is something arousing to the deer about baking soda maybe . .270 Report post Posted July 11, 2005 i keep tellin' you fellers that the only thing that works is to learn how to work the wind. scentlock stuff is crap. put it in the same box as "field dressing kits". "cough silencers" and 7mm/08's and chunk em in the dumpster. ain't no way it's gonna do anything but give you false confidence. designer camo is pretty much a joke too. dark clothes and stay in the shadows. when i bow hunted i liked either all black clothes or regular ol' woodland cammo. o' course they didn't have all this designer camo with leaves and stuff flappin' on it either back then. if a deer, or any other animals sees you, it's over. he's not gonna say "hmmmm, that bush is sneakin' up on me". he's gonna say, "look at that idiot dressed like a bush". same with smell. humans need something like 50,000 ppm to smell something, or some deal. i know it's a bunch. animals, like deer and elk and such, only need a few hundred ppm. all the scent lock, coverup, skunk scent or deodorant in the world ain't gonna help. if they wind ya, and are in the right mood, they're gonna split. sometimes they don't. don't know why, either, they just don't. but about 90% o' the time, they're gone. what galliuro mt man does is ok, but all the deer is gonna say is "hoooeeee, that boy smells like he done rolled in dirt n' cow crap". best thing is to have clean clothes and take a bath regular and work the wind. or get used to likin' to see little white tails boucin' up the draw.
