36a Junior Hunt

Recommended Posts

This hunt started out with countless hours of glassing and scouting, finally the day arrived and it all came together. Friday night we arrived at our campsite prepared to stay the whole week. Waking up bright and early at 4:30am to get to our glassing spot on time. We found the buck we have been scouting for weeks, but to our disappointment, we could not get a shot. With Sunday morning being the same, that evening we decided to try another canyon and to our suprise, we found Mule deer with Whitetail mixed in. We decided to try this canyon Monday morning. Monday morning greeted us with a beautiful sunrise with bucks chasing Does all over the canyon. We spotted this little 2x1 that gave my son a perfect opportunity with a broadside shot at 450 yards that we have been preparing for months. I placed the Thompson Pro Hunter 270 into "The Claw" and got him set up on the deer but he was so excited that he put the wrong BDC circle and shot just over the buck's back. The buck then ran 10 yards and stopped behind a Mesquite tree, we reloaded and waited for another broadside shot because my son had Buckfever and could not get steady. A few seconds later, he stepped out and gave another broadside view. My son settled down and put him in the right circle and got ready for the shot and BOOM the buck hit the ground, with a perfect heart shot. This hunt was very rewarding as it seems our family has had bad luck when it comes to closing the deal on a buck. This is a great first deer and we couldn't be more happy for him, he has worked very hard for this well deserved deer.

That's AWESOME!!!! Good for your son!!!

I was in 36A with my kids last weekend! We stalked some bucks, and shot at one (but missed...). My middle son shot his first javelina! We had a great time! Nothing like hunting with your kids!!!

Thanks much for sharing the pic & story!!
