Webber Report post Posted November 23, 2009 What grain to use for a 7mm wsm ,I use 140 gr ballistic silver tip right now i think they shoot dang good, but when i use them for deer it does to much danage to the deer. Just want to know if anyone has reloaded with a 120 gr or a 130 gr. and if they are accurate and can shoot long range with them also. Any advice would be helpful to help me. cohntr6 Report post Posted November 23, 2009 i WOULD TRY A SOFT POINT of some sort. I dont shoot that caliber but your right ballistic tips expand fast. Maybe a heavier bullet that is going a little slower. What part of the mine do you work at? Jeff
Str8Shot Report post Posted November 23, 2009 I agree with moving away from the Ballistic tips (seen a few coues damaged a little too much ) .... I would not worry to much on going to a lighter bullet just one that will will hold its weight and expand well ..... Look at the 140 gr Swift scirroco 2's (over 70% weight retention and good expansion ) or Nosler Accubonds believe the maintain about 60 - 65%
dingleberry Report post Posted November 23, 2009 I shoot a 7mm-08 with 130 grain speer SPBT. If I hit the high shoulder of a deer then I have considerable damage, I would go heavier, like a 160 grain. You"ll be going a little slower but you'll have a higher BC so your trajectory and wind drift wont be much different.
pwrguy Report post Posted November 23, 2009 I have shot a 7mm rem mag for some time. I did not find 120Gr to be very accurate out past 300 yards. I think most 7mm have a twist that works well for 140-160 gr bullets. I would stick to what is most accurate and try a different bullet if you are concerned with damage. IMO I have never had "to much damage", I would rather loose a little meat over wandering all over a hillside looking for tiny spots of blood Just my 2 cents worth. couesridge Report post Posted November 23, 2009 i agree with a heavier bullet that has a good ballistic coeficiancy i use 160 gr accubonds out of my 7mm rem mag
coues7 Report post Posted November 23, 2009 Try Bergers.....and don't go down in weight. If your shooting a 7MAG you have a good long range rifle. The Bergers have a great BC and will put down animals without making them "explode".
