Azarchery Report post Posted November 11, 2009 Hello all! It is about time I can post a story about the hunt! This year I tried something different, a new unit. I had the opportunity to scout some in the unit and pick out the area to glass for the hunt. My brother, elkhunter, and my dad joined me for the hunt and we saw overall 19 bucks and tons of does during the hunt. On Saturday evening we spotted 5 bucks together and we had the opportunity to get closer about 300 yards from the biggest buck in the group. The sun was setting and it was difficult for me to spot the deer 300 yards with 9x scope with limited of light. We decided to wait til the day; we will be out in the same spot before the sun rise and ready to glass them out. Sure did we found them again the next day we did all we can do to plan out how to get closer for better shot until all of the bucks got spooked and went over the mountain from all of that 15 shots from a mile away! *sigh* We glassed out other areas saw some spikes but held out for the bigger bucks that we saw earlier. Finally Monday morning we headed out the same area where we saw the bucks, Tyler spotted a different buck, 3x3 buck which was bedded down. We hiked to the spot to shoot from and I got all set up, safety is off ready to shoot.. Until the buck got up AND for the stupidest reason, I looked over at Tyler instead of shooting it at 260 yards!!! The buck ran off over the mountain. This moment will haunt me in my dreams. BUT… lesson learned. Then we all went up the mountain to go after the buck. We found a spike that we saw earlier on Saturday and debating whether if I should go and shoot the spike or wait until if we can find the other bucks again. We all watched this buck for 4 hours. If I pass up this opportunity, maybe there might not be another opportunity! I did not get a buck last year and did not want to go home empty hand again. Sure enough I decided to get the spike, so I got set up at 280 yards ready to shoot…. Missed! Missed again, again, and again until it was out of our sight…. Another dream that will haunt me…. Another lesson learned….*gulp* I missed because I did not put the butt of the rifle against my shoulder to stabilize the rifle, and all shots were to the right. We headed out to the other side of the mountain hoping we will see the bucks.. Bingo! Tyler spotted the same spike that I missed! Yep I wanted to get it so bad. I got within 282 yards from the spike and it went down on the spot (the butt of the rifle was on my shoulder!!). I was thrilled! This hunt was the most frusturating but taught me the most valuable lesson that I have experienced. I got a spike but getting that deer was some hard work and I am proud of it. I am very thankful for my brother and dad being patience with me and keeping up with the hard work. I would not go back and change one bit of the hunting experience. Thank you for reading my story! Here are some pictures, enjoy. Me watching the spike (see the spike? left side of the tree) Me, Tyler, and dad with my buck.
Benbrown Report post Posted November 11, 2009 Good job! Congratulations! A lot of us are doomed to learn things the hard way. But you persevered and ultimately succeeded--that's what's important.
COUESAZ Report post Posted November 11, 2009 Way to go on your deer. Each year we all learn somthing new. The best thing to learn is to take someone in a lions shirt with no sleeves right. HAHA Great hunt. Anytime you get to hunt with your family is a good hunt. I am hoping to get down on my dads hunt in 32 this week end. It has been a few years. and a hunt that is long past due i fill.
