DotShot Report post Posted November 10, 2009 Well my 16 y/o son drew his first Bull tag this year and to say the least was quite excited. It was a rifle tag and the hunt started on the 5th of Oct. We left the trailer real early as the area i had chose to take him to was a ways away from our camp and I wanted to get in and quieted down well before sunrise. As the sun started to crack the horizon we got our gear together and went over a few last minute details at which time i gave him the final say as to what our plan would be. After he had made the choice we set off. The morning was not cold by any means and things were VERY quiet, no bugles at all. We worked our way down a clearcut sidehill into a small bottom where we picked up a trail that came off a waterhole that was a mere 1/4 mile away. As we worked our way along the trail we came into an area and decided to sit in hopes something would come off of the waterhole as they went from their feeding area to the bedding area. As we sat we had the opportunity to watch a few Turkeys walk within about 60 yards oblivious to our presence. As the turkeys passed i looked at my watch, 0654, i told Cody that at 0700 we would work our way along the trail and head to another water hole about a mile away where we would sit a blind for the remainder of the day. At 0700 we proceeded along the trail my son following behind me. We had walked about 50 yards when my son whispered, "Dad stop, theres an Elk up on the sidehill". We stopped and i worked my way quietly back to my son, raised my binos and saw nothing but the tail end of an Elk. I looked intently and saw no antlers and proceeded to tell my son it was a cow, he replied "No dad, i see antlers". I raised the binos one more time and this time i saw antler tips but wasnt sure as to how big of a bull it was. I continued to survey the Bull and asked Cody if he was sure he wanted to take it, to which he replied "Oh I'm sure" so i said "Get after it". Cody took a seat, calmed his nerves and squeezed the trigger, the bull raised his head as if to say, "what was that?" then immediately went back to feeding, Cody had missed! Cody chambered another round and fired again, another miss! the bull never even flinched and continued to feed. Cody again chambered a round and fired again, this time the Bull dropped in his tracks! What i did not know is that the lane Cody had to shoot through was very narrow and he only had about a 6" wide gap between a couple of trees to shoot through. Cody and I Whooped and Hollered gave each other a great big hug then promptly proceeded up to the Bull. As we approached slowly i realized why he insisted on shotting this bull. He is not a huge bull by any means, but as this was a "rut" hunt bulls tend to be broken, this bull was an almost perfect 6x6 not a single tine broken. As Cody and i surveyed his success i was now reminded why I encouraged my boys to hunt. I do not know who was more excited, my son, or me. The emotions that I felt at that particular moment were unexplainable. I can honestly now say I know why my father loved to take us boys hunting, Thanks Dad.
