sycamore canyon?

Recommended Posts

hey guys, well i am craving a backpacking trip. been wanting to spend some time exploring down in the bottom of sycamore canyon for a long time now and this is it, going for it. looking to spend probably about 6 days, 5 nights down there and well i just cant carry 6 days worth of water. was wondering if anyone knew what the water situation is down there this time of year? are the creeks flowing enough to purify water? how about all the springs that are down there? water is really the only concern that i have, i am an avid backpacker and got all the cool gadgets. spent 4 weeks backpacking in the brooks range and alaska range this last fall and i just cant get enough.

if anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

bob

and since everyone likes pictures, heres one of my '09 buck.

hey guys, thanks to those few that chimed in with some information, very helpful.

give me a few days and i'll put together some pictures and a little story about my DIY sheep hunt in Alaska. about 20 days were spent tromping around the brooks range then 12 days were spent exploring the alaska range, what an adventure.

if anyone has anymore information on the water situation in the bottom of sycamore canyon it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

bob

Call the Forest Service. You will probably want to let them know when you are going in and coming out and where.

You would be better off letting a buddy or the forum know. Don't rely on the FS for saftey.

Which sycamore canyon? There 5 or 6 in AZ. Have a great time!

Which end are you planning on entering? Is this a turnaround or are you being dropped off at one trailhead and picked up at another? I'm not sure how the fire at Turkey Butte affected the standing water since we have had very little rain and snow but could be a lot of ash in the creek bed and water holes in that area.

Which Sycamore canyon? the one in 34A is pretty dry, the one in 35B has some water right now, but not much, and the one in 33 is dry as a bone. I am sure there is a sycamore canyon in just about every unit in the state...

well actually i commercial fish up in alaska in the summers and decided to take off looking for a nice ram to kill, didnt connect but had a great time!

well i'd really like to get dropped off down by henderson flat and then picked up just south of LO pocket, but from what i have found, i dont think the water is going to allow me to do that.

i didnt know about that fire at turkey butte, something i'll have to talk to the FS about.

thanks again

Off topic, but I had to reply to Shooter's post. I spent 7 summers in South East Alaska, 5 of them commercially fishing for salmon. That was back some years ago, 1976-1982. They were great summers and I really enjoyed being out on the Ocean!

Fire was named Taylor fire on the Coconino Forest, FYI for others this Sycamore is the boundary of units 6B and 8. I can vouch for treatable water on the upper end in Colcord Canyon small rock pools are holding water and will still have water through November. I know of several pockets down stream to Tule Tank Wash that usually hold water year round but have not verified that this year. We had a very dry summer season with a good wet spring. Best to check out some of the hiking forums or clubs for up to date info
