BML Report post Posted November 6, 2009 I know Savage now makes a production 6.5-284, but it's around $1300 or so. http://www.savagearms.com/12f_class.htm I didn't know there was another manufacturer out there making one for $700.

Horsefor4 Report post Posted November 6, 2009 I have both a 6.5 x284 and a 6.5x06 AI. Just my 2 cents the 6.5x06 AI is a much better hunting rifle do to case design. It also burns about same amount of powder.
AZkiller Report post Posted November 16, 2009 Your going to spend more than 1300 on a custom that will shoot. The problem with the factory guns that think they are custom, ie fluted, breaks ,adj triggers. They are a prettier factory gun. MOA is not acceptable for LR. Real LR. A well built custom will run 2500-3500 no scope. McMillan stock, Lilja barrel, Jewel trigger, that's how you shoot consistantly at long range.
reganranch Report post Posted November 16, 2009 Dad bought me a model 700 XCR 300 Ultra mag for my 17th bday this summer and i love it its a great caliber flat shooting and has 3000+fps depending on the load you shoot. We blew up a couple of 5 gallon buckets 800 yards out with it and its a great caliber by remington!
TAM Report post Posted November 16, 2009 Blake, I don't think you will be disappointed with your choice of caliber. We will have a real nice custom for you to shoot if you can make it shooting with us on Saturday. For what it's worth, even with known barrel burning calibers you can extend the life of the barrel if you just back off the powder a grain or two. Keep doing your homework and let us know what you find.
matthewp45 Report post Posted November 16, 2009 Here is what I did. I recieved a Remington model 700 model XCR in 7MM RUM for a birthday present. I first took it in and had the smith work on the trigger and turn it into a crisp 2 lb. trigger that is as good as a timney any day. I took it out and worked up some loads to see how the stock barrel shot (26") barrel. I got it to shoot 160 grain accubonds at about a 1/2" group. So the factory barrel was perfect I did not have to rebarrel. I purchased a Belle and Carlson medalist stock and sent the action, barrel, trigger, scope rings and everything metal to have cerakote put on it. When I got everything returned I had the whole thing bedded and put together. So I ended up with a semi custom rifle with stock barrel and trigger that had a little work done to them, a new stock bedded 100% with zero pressure. A completely weather coated rifle that shoots a 160 grain accubond at 3,400 fps with a 1/2" group at 100 yards. After completion I topped it off with a Mark 4 Leupold 4.5X14X40MM with target knobs that I had in the safe. I sent off for Kenton turrets and now am shooting 850 yards with unbelievable accuracy. With the gunsmith work and all the parts it was about $800.
joeybari Report post Posted November 16, 2009 If your looking for a custom rifle that is not two expensive I would go with a 308 rem 700 LTR I think you can pick one up for 850 dollars it shoot great out of the box I use a 175 bt black hills ammo its cheep 29 dollars a box if you plain on reloading there is a ton of info on the net and books about that load. It’s a very good long range gun for paper and for hunting. The recoil is very low. I love mine I have hunted elk to Coues deer with it. I will tell you the thing that you will have to do is get a trigger job done on it asap but it comes with a floating barrel and I has the good old REM bolt action no work to be done there. coues7 Report post Posted November 16, 2009 Joey Where did you get a Mark 4 and gun work done under $800? I have a friend with a Savage 110 chambered in 30-06 and everyone is telling him to sell and start from scratch. I'm trying to convince him to stay with the Savage and just get a Mark 4. Great thread. Scott
