Great Topic but one that still hits close to home. My true hunting partners are still my Dad and my wife. It also depends on what I am hunting.....if I am out with my bow for deer you would most likely find me alone but for everything else my Dad is my ultimate hunting partner.

Now on to the story.....This last archery elk season my brother-in-law, his brother, my "friend", and myself all drew bull tags in unit 10. We had all hunted together for quite a few years on day trips and such and I felt comfortable with them. My dad is the one who runs our elk camp even though he hasn't had a tag in over 8 years and he said that it would be ok to take them, what a mistake. It seems that they just couldn't realize what a special thing it was to have such a tag. Even though my group had hunted well before it seems they just weren't cut out for it and wasted their tags by hunting for a weekend and going home. I felt really bad because my dad would have died for their tags but he never said a word until it was all over and then he told me it was something that he learned the hard way and now I have too. We are all still friends but I don't forsee any future trips together and that is why I am thankfull for my to partners that value their time outdoors as much as I do and it makes it that much more special that they are my dad and wife.

My dad has some friends that we hunt with and one best friend that goes all the time but usually when there is more than two of us we go our seperate ways and meet up somewhere or back at the truck.

I have learned that before I take any one on a quality hunt or to one of my honey holes I will go some where over a weekend to see how they truley act and how we truely would get along.

Words of wisdom Kevin! How could I have forgotten to mention him?

My father is elderly now, and doesn't get out near as much as he used to so he's kind of fallen out of my circle of 'regular hunting buddies'. He'll always be my honorary best hunting bud though, and BY FAR the best memories I have of time spent with him come from hunting trips. We built a strong bond over the years, and I hope to have that bond with my own sons (and daughter... :) ) someday.

He still loves getting out in the desert, and comes along for opening day of quail season each year. I never get tired of hearing his old WWII stories!

good huntin buds are very hard to find!so apprecate the ones you can count on.ive got one guy that i always can count on. to hunt and scout with me.the hunt starts way before the season opens, scouting and shooting and having the proper equipment.i hate nothing more than spending a lot of time scouting and have no one else spend the time and money to insure a good hunt. but when opening day comes they are your best friend.we camp pretty good. i have a 5th wheel travel trailer that i stay in. I always try to have a little relax time somewhere in the hunt. i usauly drink myself silly one night "party night" . but i still hunt as hard as possible and take the hunt serously.i always try and spend at least 5 days on a hunt or more. and that does not matter if i am the tag holder.i enjoy being there just as much.i will hunt with anybody that i can and help them as much as i can.i just try to have a good experence and the hunt is the most important thing.

Right now my youngest brother is my hunting partner, I have three kids that I hope one day will hunt with me, my father passed away a few years ago and until then me, him, and my brothers hunted and fished as much as possible, he was a much better fisherman than hunter, but that never stopped him from taking us hunting.

I have three consistent hunting partners. I hunt with my dad and my brother for rifle deer. My dad got me into hunting and he is starting to slow down, but I still hunt with him even if it means not getting to that "prime" spot at that "prime" time. My time with my brother has been limited since he became a police officer and his shifts don't always match up with my time off, but we always put in together. I also hunt archery elk with him. Time spent in the field with family is priceless.

I have also hunted archery deer with a friend that has taught me a lot about glassing and hunting in general. He has opened up his camp with his hunting partners to me on two occasions and I really appreciate that. I hope that I can return the favor to him at some point.

I have some other friends that I have hunted with, but it has been at least 5 years since I have hunted with them. People change over time, and they have become more concerned about filling the tag and doing it their way that if I do hunt with them again, I will probably go my own way.

I hunt with my large extended family alot and a buddy from work. The buddy from work rarely questions my stupidity when hunting so it make it easier, we get along pretty good and have weathered alot of times while hunting or fishing in which we were lucky to make it out as well as we did. It is nice when someone does not question an awful lot about why you want to walk off into that big bottomless hole and if your sure you can make it back out of there in the dark OK :).

bret, i thought you told me you told me you got your huntin' pards offa the prison penpals website. i hunt with my boys, my ol' man, my brother and a couple select friends who have short term memory loss and can't remember where we went or the tricks i pulled on em in camp. last time i went with one pal he had a brand new tent and a buncha new campin' equipment. the memory loss deal was handy because he didn't 'member that i burned all his other stuff in a fart lightin' accident. My favorite hunting partners are my sons. I have three boys that I have taught the art of hunting to. To me this is one of the most enjoyable parts of hunting, teaching them the little tricks I've picked up over the years and then seeing them evolve as hunters. Last year a got drawn for a bull elk hunt and my oldest son decided he was going with me, to help out the old man! He took off work and went off with me I had a friend that lived in our hunting area but he could'nt help until the third day of the hunt. We didn't have any luck for the first tthree days finnaly on the fourth day my son could hunt the morning with me but would have to return home in the afternoon to go to work the next day. I relly wanted to take a bull while he was still with me to share the experiance. As luck would have it I killed a nice 6X6 bull early in the morning and my son was more excited than I was, I would'nt have traded that moment with him for all the money in the world.

Unlike many of you, I have not grown up hunting with my dad. He would be sure to plan family camping trips that were near trout waters when I was young, but he never had an interest in hunting or fishing. His dad, my grandfather, always took me fishing during the summers in Wisconsin to catch bluegills or bullheads with worms we dug up from his garden.

I did not start hunting till after college in 1980 when I lived on a ranch in south Texas, and just about all I know has been self-taught through reading and experience-no mentor. Those of you with knowledgeable hunting dads and uncles are blessed.

In the last 25 years, my main partner has been a friend from high school. We have shared many hunts together in AZ and CO and NM. I have shared a couple of elk camps with him and his dad too. My friend and I have similar techniques, although we sometimes share a camp, we most often hunt in separate directions to cover more terrain. About half of the hunts, we put in together, but we sometimes have differing desires about when ad where.

I also have a friend whom I enjoy sharing a camp with, and hunt with a couple times a year and shoot 3D. Although we do not put in together, we often choose the same units.

Along the way, I have hunted with another archer who I will probably not again due to his drunkenness and swearing and loud arguments with his girlfriend and shooting at ducks without a stamp.

To share a camp and hunt, I personally would not choose a person with an Alpha personality as I am rather low-key. I think that half of my hunts have been by myself, due to the freedom afforded. Hunting alone has advantages and disadvantages though. When by myself, I definitely miss the camp comraderie. Hunting with others has benefits and risks, also.

Hey Doug

Kind of a neat topic! I never big game hunted with my Dad either! I guess he just never really got the opportunity, or he never found the interest. I hunt alone quite a bit! My best hunting partner though is by far my son! I have been dragging him along for close to 18 years now and we just seem to have a lot of fun together. I am pretty much a hard core hunter, and when he hit around 16 or so I lost him for a bit. He is 22 now and is married and is settled in a little more so we seem to be hunting more together lately. I have had some hunting buddies, but something always seems to happen to ''rub them the wrong way'', maybe its me and I am just to independent. or an as_ _ _ le, or something.I don`t know. I really like hunting alone because if I see something that I wanna check out I just do it, and don`t worry about convincing someone else to go with me. I really do not like camping alone a whole lot , but I have quite a bit. It just gets a little too lonely after a hard days hunt to not have someone there to share the days events with! My only other long term huntin buddy is my ,brother in law, but he got smart some twentyfive years ago and moved to AZ. Must be a lot smarter then I am too!
