GingerRam Report post Posted October 30, 2009 Hey everyone - Love the site and have been lurking for some time. I have a question for everyone as I have grown to value the opinions shared on this site. I usually hunt with a 7MM and love it.. This past year I was given a DPMS AR in 308 and I was thinking of hunting with it. I'll be in 36B this November and am pretty good to 450 with both guns. What are your thoughts? Thanks - GR
bonecollector Report post Posted October 30, 2009 Its what ever gun your are most comfortable with, just remember if you use the AR you cant use the 20 or 30 rd. mags. Good Luck
joeybari Report post Posted October 30, 2009 You’re not allowed to use the AR with a full clip for hunting the max rounds in a high powered rifle to hunt is 3 rounds but here is the thing. If you’re out there and border patrol or a G&F they will give you a hard time by stopping you and checking all the time

If you’re out there and border patrol or a G&F they will give you a hard time by stopping you and checking all the time you are incorrect, you are allowed to hunt with a 5 round magazine. I would absolutely hunt with it if I were you. Good luck!

GingerRam Report post Posted October 30, 2009 Thanks for your input. I am almost more wary of the reaction I will get from the UDA's. I have been hunting 36B my whole life and while like most of you I have had my run-ins with illegals I haven't had anything get too out of control. I just wonder what would happen if one of these folks see's a single individual with an AR.. Probably over thinking things....

If you’re out there and border patrol or a G&F they will give you a hard time by stopping you and checking all the time I also believe that the mag you use can only be capable of holding five rounds. If you use a 30 round mag and only have five rounds in it you will still be in violation.
Broken Wheels Report post Posted October 30, 2009 Use the short mag for legal hunting purposes on two legged critters and carry a couple 30 rd mags for those ever present two legged critters and always "aim small miss small"! That AR is a very accurate weapon and if you are used to it that is the weapon to use my friend! Good luck hunting and keep the sun at your back and the wind in your face! WinMag Report post Posted October 31, 2009 ok......here is the next question along the same lines. What about using an AR in .223 for a coues hunt? Do you still think it is a good idea?

I've been checked for that. you can take the mag apart, if its a high cap one, and put a plug in an ar mag as well to make it a legal 5 rounder.
cactusjack Report post Posted November 2, 2009 I have the DPMS 308 and it shoots very well. It is,IMHO, too heavy to pack in any distance. Mine weighs in around 9 lbs without the optics or mag. I like my rifle to be around the 6lb range. I bought some 5 rounders from 44mag.com for around 25 bucks each with the intention of hunting with it. Just sayin. BTW Nice gift. firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted November 2, 2009 I love my AR for coyote hunting, but I will stick to the bolt gun for deer. Carry a side arm (12+1 .40 S&W) for the two legged critters.
