Squirrel

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

A buddy and I are hoping to head out and do a little squirrel hunting tomorrow. Problem is, I have never hunted them and was just looking for a general area to go where we might get into a few. Any help would be greatly appreciated and feel free to PM. Just looking for a GENERAL area and thank you in advance!!!

Also, how will the scattered snow storms up on the rim tomorrow affect their movements? Will the squirrel hit their dens and not come out thus making the trip an effort in futility?

Once again thank you in advance and I hope everyone is having a wonderful fall hunting season.

There are some that will hate me for this BUT

going out and exploring some new country by driving around

and staying warm on a day like Tomorrow aint a bad way to go.

Have a fun day out and go somewhere you haven't been.

Keep the eyeballs pealed for running squirrels and become a

track star and run them up a tree.

Each of you get on opposite sides of the tree and work around it.

Have fun.

There are good squirrel hunting opportunities in Units 1, 3B & C, 4A & B, 5A & B and 27. Look in areas where there are lots of Ponderosa pines and oaks, usually lower elevations 6-8000 ft., and you'll find good populations of Abert's. At higher elevations in spruce/fir/aspen woods you'll find another kind of squirrel, I think it's a fox squirrel, that is smaller than the tassel-eared Abert's, but still good eating. At the higher elevations keep an eye out for grouse, too. For best chance of success, look in areas that have recently been thinned or burned. I like to use a call to locate them, it helps a lot. A few barks with a call and they usually reply so you know where they are, then stalk up on them. I understand there are good populations of squirrel on the Kiabab, too, but I've never hunted there.

I love squirrel hunting, only thing better is squirrel eating. Best of luck to you on your adventure.

A BIG thanks to all who replied! My friend and I headed up on Thursday despite the scattered snow forecast on the rim. Before the snows started we hiked a closed road off of the Rim Road for about two hours. Saw 7 elk, one of which was a 5x5 bull. It was great to see them and it really got me excited for my Unit 10 antlerless hunt in December with my brother.

On the hike we saw exactly one squirrel but he was gone before I could call my friend over. We joked that all the squirrels must be by the truck. Sure enough, when we got back to the truck on the drive out we hit an area with a bunch of them. After a hike away from the road we ended up with two before the snow really started to fall.

Overall it was a great day and thanks again for all the replies!
