Going back to Mulies

Recommended Posts

I can't decide if I either have a great deal of respect or think of you all as crazy :P for doing so much work for these tiny deer(even the big ones). I still have a few more days left in my hunt but man are they sneaky and hard. I have such a hard time just sitting and glassing for hours( my problem). They really do disappear easy. I have been in areas where you would swear they are farming deer in there or something. Had a 200 yard shot at a running 85-90+ 3x3 buck but could hardly see him as he was in the shadows and I was shooting into the sun. I guess I at least tried. I do think I will go back to Mulies though. Thats just what I have grown up hunting and know how to do better. Have learned alot though and will be even better at Mulie hunting cause of it. Who knows, if I can get a later December tag, I may be back out after the grey ghosts again. So how much better is it if the weather is colder?? Yeah, I laugh now at the Outdoor channel when these people talk about tuff hunts back east hunting Eastern Whitetail. If you can be successful at Coues, I think the rest, exception of sheep maybe, would be easy or lots easier. Good luck to the rest of you on your hunts!

Bear,

Don't be so hard on yourself, these guys on this site eat, sleep and drink coues and they are a pretty unique bunch. They spend alot of time at it and the results are there because of their time and expertise.

I feel for you in that for those of us who have hunted mostly mulie we(I) feel pretty inadequate when it comes to coues but I have decided my weakness is lack of time in the field when it comes to pre season.

Don't give up on them, they are sneaky, but just look at the awesome pics these hunters put on this site and it makes me want to try again and again until I can put a respectable picture on here with my mug next to it.

I didn't get drawn this year but will be chomping at the bit for next years drawn in hopes of the chance for that illusive ghost of a deer.

I shot a little forkie coues last year and a little three point about 15 years ago out of unit 27, I missed a monster in New Mexico when I was 17 shaking like a leaf off hand shot. But I still want a wall hanger....

Yeah, I just can't spend the amount time in the field it takes in order to be more successful at least for the bigger ones anyways. But thats okay. I still like the fact that I can go out and hunt either way. I still have fun. I still just cant get over the fact that they are so much different than Mule deer and I am not talking physical differences. One of these days when my lil ones are bigger and can go with me, than I might start going more dedicated and truly scout and glass some harder and longer. Whoe knows. Again, How much does colder weather affect there behavior?? I dont mean rut time either though.

Coues hunting is frustrating IMO, but it makes it that much more rewarding when you do finally get one on the ground. I had a nice little forky today at about 400 yds but I didn't want to take a shot because I was afraid I wouldnt be able to find him it was very thick brush where he was at. I tried to put a stalk on him but never seen him again. I probably walked right by him they are so sneaky! Good luck dont give up on the coues.

Are you kidding me! What would Lute Olsen say? When the going got tough did Lute say " lets go back to the WAC conference the Pac Ten is too hard." Hunting carp is playing in the minor leagues. No way beardown. You have to 'BEARDOWN'. Now get back out there and find a Coues. Any will do. Forget your Job. Forget your family. Forget all obligations.Even forget the Red Blue scrimmage! Coues hunting comes first. Now get back out there and give it 110%. Quitters never win and you only lose when you stop trying, so don't let the team down. Hustle!

Man if that were a possibility I can't even dream about that option.

See I told you Bear, these hunters here are relentless.....don't wait for your kids to grow up, you will miss a great opportunity if you wait for that...........

To answer your question, the temperature change will affect deer activity, especially if it drops snow tonight, you better be on that ridge just waiting......cause now you are looking for whitetail on the white snow and oh man my blood is boiling now....get out there you have a tag in your pocket.........

goood luck....

He didn't say that but he did make sure his money was in a seperate account when the fit hit the shan.......

I love Lute, I took my basketball team to one of his camps 15 years ago when I taught in Ash Fork and he treated us like we belonged even though we were a bunch of misfits.

Now Bear.....get out there......

Not giving up yet! I will hunt till my last day or till I get one. I was just mentioning that I am not sure that Coues is my cup of tea but I can see more and more as I go out why people do like them. I am starting to comeup with different game plans and have been in some really heavy Coues country. Gonna get up tomorrow and make myself plant in one spot and do some real glassing. I think people get hooked cause they are hard and want vengeneance on there sorry lil butts  ! kinda like wanting what you can't have sorta deal. And screw the WAC, its all PAC-10 here!! And were is Illinois program going right now?? Not the direction Sean Millers is!!! We'll give you that game and blown lead ;) !

Now that's the Wildcat spirit. Make sure you are in a glassable area. When I was transitioning from carp to Coues I picked areas that had lots of CWT, but were way too thick for glassing. Most of the pictures of the successful hunters this year show glassable terrain. Think cactus.

Desert Bull, What the heck, you trying to make me cry at my work site? Why don't you give us a video of Anderson Hunt shoving Kenny Lofton down and drainig a three or maybe a video of Shane Battier slamming Jason Gardners head into the basket support and not even getting a foul! Cold blooded.
