Str8Shot Report post Posted November 9, 2009 Well OK Chris. I sure hope we can all live up to your expectations dude. To hope for a youth hunter to have his hunting rights pulled is a joke. Many people use binos for the pupose to evaluate a shot on a game animal. Yes the fact that the cow went a diferant direction is not a sure sign that she was hit. I have seen deer and elk have a round hit under them and the run the oposite direction as the rest of the herd, Because the boogy man was trying to get them. I do believe the young man was shooting a 7mm. He is not a small boy. Dang near as big as I am. Yeah I seen from a different post after I commented here that he is shooting a 7mm with custom Barnes 150 gr loads grouping at 200 yards .... Both shots were way under the range he seemed to be accurate at... "I am looking thru binos @ the elk he has shot" ... his words not "shot at" not "missed" Now while I agree and understand that binos are used to evaluate shots ... you as well as every other person here know that there is a multitude of info to determine if you hit the animal you are sighted on .... it was not a Coues @120 or 60 yards it was an elk... Did he see dirt fly through the binos? (doubt that 150 gr bullet would pass through) , what about the sound? we all know that thud a bullet makes when it hits .... how did the animal react ?according to the post she moved but was not running was not taking anyone else with her... if time had been taken and she was not wounded she would have drawn back to the herd ... Sad you think that doing the right thing before you have to make an excuse for doing something stupid is a high expectation COUESAZ ... and your dang right that i think there should be some consequence for poor choices (not accidents) And Yes both son and father or just the adult temporary losing hunting rights (1 or 2 years) IMHO would be fair ... but having nothing done and then posting here about how doing the right thing by contacting G&F saved you from consequence does a major disservice To AZ hunting... Teaching his son to have confidence in his shot Teaching his son the patience to wait and see the outcome of placed shots Teaching Him how to accept the disappointment if he had lost the first one he shot at these all would be good lessons but instead he taught him to make a bad decision and then try to make it right after the fact .... Not a good life lesson to learn in my opinion
n777ea Report post Posted November 9, 2009 I'm glad the G&F did not fine anyone and let them keep the meat. And I like someone who is man enough to face up to a mistake. There is a time to go hard line on something and in my opinion this was not the time. Thanks for sharing.
WadeNAZ Report post Posted November 10, 2009 WOW...I have to tell you I had to think a long time before posting to this one. I agree (as I think everyone involved here does too) there is no excuse for shooting at a second animal when there is even a possibility you may have fatally or non-fatally wounded another. However, I also believe as much as we can learn from each others successes, we can learn from other's failures. That is after all why it was posted. Right? If others are going to learn from it I think now that Team Jesus has had some more time to look at the events. maybe he could share what he has learned and what he feels he could have done differently rather than everyone else telling him... . In reading the originating post I did sense that while no fines or penalty was given, it sounded like Team Jesus did man up and was willing to take resposibility for his actions and wether what was done was right, wrong or debatable, that alone is respectable. And Chris (Bro) time to take your meds... JK man! I know how passionate you are.
bonecollector Report post Posted November 10, 2009 WOW! WOW! WOW! Salt to the wound. Some of you would do good to to take a lesson from Thumper. "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." I get the point, but now I cannot let my son read these post because it has turned into an attack. It was posted to show your youth, an opportunity to show right, wrong, ethincs and whatever else you could learn from it. I did not have to tell this story and could have left out many details and you would only have been able to say good job to my son. I choose not to. As far as the fines and confiscation of animals. I expected it. It is great that you are not my Judger for you have no Grace but will want it one day. I have accepted the resposability. I cannot change what happened. My son should and will not be the one to pay for this. John 8:7(look it up) Well said! Its a youth hunting, if there is a problem dont crucify the youth publicly so they can see it and get discouraged from hunting.
Oso Verde Report post Posted November 14, 2009 I don't think anyone is attacking anyone especially the young man. My son has read this post and has learned a great deal from it. He even provided me with insight that you can only get from a 12 year old. I don't see why yours can't read it. It is time to move on.
Snapshot Report post Posted November 14, 2009 You did the right and honorable thing by calling G&F. Mistakes are made sometimes in the heat of the moment. It is also a positive lesson for a young hunter to know that the rules should be followed, and hopefully reap good hunting dividends in the future.
