Buzz_Saw Report post Posted October 15, 2009 Okay, Folks- Please forgive me, but I am brain damaged. Really. Traumatic Brain Injury. BLUF- I do not understand what a nonpermit-tag is and what privileges and requirements adhere. Please explain, somebody!! I own land in GMU 31 up against Coronado National Forest. I really do not intend to hunt the forest, but if I see something through my glasses.... I do understand the there are more options with archery and muzzleloader, but what does an over the counter nonpermit-tag actually do for me?? Here is the trivial stuff... I grew up in Iowa where the only big game was whitetail, and I had to use a shotgun. Hunting was in 10 or 15 degrees below zero. The only shots I ever got were at the enormous coyotes that fed on the farmer's livestock. I did have a wonderful life of pheasant, rabbit and squirrel hunting. Later on, I spent 20 years in the FL Panhandle where I could shoot dear daily during the long season through my bedroom window and occasionally did. I learned that ear plugs were a very good idea, even more so than when outdoors. Of course, I also learned during other training that shooting a handgun from inside a car can easily cause temporary deafness and permanent hearing loss. Was it that or the artillery or the explosions? Or was it cumulative? Don't know, but the permanent ringing in my ears means I have music 24X7 even without an iPod. Then I served a three year sentence in the Socialist State of Maryland and only escaped captivity last year. Know what I mean? You do if you ever worked or served in that area. Hunting on Ft. Meade was a true experience. Hunting in VA is really fun, but I always mistook those little, tiny deer for dogs and never shot at them, much to the dismay of my hosts and hunting buddies. Didn't seem right. So here I am, settled in AZ permanently (I hope), and I find the AZ hunting regs to be the most obtuse of any place I have ever been. Even Europe was way, way more understandable. Heck, there you can shoot game in the middle of the night. If you can see it well enough to shoot it you can. Amazing, really. So, I have missed the regular Spring draw for big game for 2010. I am thinking that since AZ is trying to eliminate all Elk from my GMU,, that bear occasionally wander down and raid people's freezers (I tell you what. Any bear in my backyard will be in the freezer) I decided that I should carry around whatever legal document is required should one just show up in my area. Could be any type of surprise. Coyotes are thick up there, but I don't know how good they taste. I have a rule not to shoot anything I will not eat, unless I, or someone I care about, is in danger. I don't think I can even shoot squirrels, since there is some kind of endangered variety, and I am pretty sure with my double vision that I will not be able to tell a legal one from not. Enough for now. I am trying to learn some new tricks. Thanks all.
Snapshot Report post Posted October 15, 2009 I suggest you start by downloading a copy of the hunting regulations from the G&F website. All you ask is within those pages. www.azgdf.com

Coues79 Report post Posted October 15, 2009 Please forgive me, but I am brain damaged. Really. Traumatic Brain Injury. BLUF- I do not understand what a nonpermit-tag is and what privileges and requirements adhere. Please explain, somebody!! A non-permit tag is one that does not have to be obtained through the lottery process of issuance of big game tags. In other words, you can purchase them over-the-counter at local AZGFD vendor i.e. Wal-Mart, Sportsmans Warehouse etc. These non-permit tags usually offer a generous hunting season, however, per species the legal method of take will be restricted. i.e. Archery deer for most units is a non-permit tag during the early fall, and in December and January. There are a few species in which have rifle hunts that are non-permit hunts but you must read up on, on the AZGFD website. Some have specific areas that you must adhere to, or, will tell you the specific season/time/legal game. The elk that you are referencing in 31 will be very hard to find, and I believe you must obtain the non-permit tag at an AZGFD office (not 100% sure, so somebody correct me if I'm wrong). Good luck finding the elk! Here are a few links that may be helpful. Good luck. http://www.azgfd.gov/eservices/BigGameDrawingProcess.shtml http://www.azgfd.gov/h_f/OverTheCounter.shtml http://www.azgfd.gov/eservices/downloads.shtml
Str8Shot Report post Posted October 15, 2009 I guess I am in lost in your questions .... if you are talking about over the counter permits they are available for Archery Deer in all units but those for draw Such as units 1,3a,3c,7,12a,12b,13a,13b..... The times for archery are set in th the non permit archery hunt info in the regs and specify what units at what dates.... Archery Deer is mandatory reporting on harvest If you are asking about Bear .... The same applys with bear being a non permit tag and open to more legal methods of hunting however each unit has a cap on the overall harvest for each time frame and if wanting to hunt you must contact G&F and know if the HArvest limits have been met and if the hunt in such unit you choose is still open .... Mandatory reporting on Harvest is required Moutain lion is also a non permit tag over the counter and the season which a few years ago was year round has now been shortened and annual limit of 1 mountain lion per year except in certain units stated in the regs .... Mandatory reporting of harvest is also required As of 2 Years ago there is also limited opportunity non permit ELK tags available these are much harder hunts and in units with lower amounts of ELk and very Small Home herds available .... Here too the specifics for each hunt and unit and method of take are listed in the Elk regs .... For Turkey your non permit over teh counter choice is for Achery only and the specific units and dates are listed under Archery non permit tag Turkey in the Regs .... If in Question Check the Regs and your local G&F office or warden ..... As far as taking big game on your private property in AZ is not allowed unless specific property is in a unit and a hunt time in which you possess the TAG .... Not sure if that is what you were looking for but maybe it will help
ron b Report post Posted October 15, 2009 I was dumbfounded when I started to read all of the permit tags and seasons, etc. One of the non-permit tags that you might be interested in is the mountain lion, a very generous season. Really, after you read and reread the rules and regs they start to make sense. Ron
