How old should my boy be?

Recommended Posts

I didn't know where else to post this topic... My son is 5 years old right now and I am dying to get him in the field. He has an amazing love of hunting already, he prefers the hunting channel over cartoons. He also has an incredible ability to focus on one thing for an extended period of time, for example, 18 holes of golf is not enough for him. How early (age wise) has anyone else taken their children along on a hunting trip, even if it is just a javelina or turkey hunt?

I started taking my boy out at 2 and he is now 3 1/2 and has already shot my Pistol 22 with help of course. They are never to young to get them out and enjoy some time together. He loves to check the trail cameras too.

My old man started taking me on all day hikes on hunts when I was 5. I still remember that hunt. It was an archery pig tag, and I made the decision on which way to go when the trail split, and we got onto a herd of pigs no more than 5 minutes later. I almost got run over by 3 pigs when Pops busted them up! I loved every minute of it. Get him out there! Heck, I went on my first elk hunt at 3 months!

All of my boys were out there in the field with me by the time they were 5. Pack some snacks and plenty of water and I'll bet you'll be trying to keep up with him. :P I love to see you dads (and moms) getting the whole family out there young learning all about hunting. Sounds to me like he's plenty ready! Have fun with it!

I actually took my boys in a backpack before they could walk. Just be prepared to keep the trips short. If they are ready to go, then take em home (stop for ice cream on the way), so they have a good memory of the trip. They are 5 and 8 now, and hunt with me reguarly, not even video games will slow them down. Start with some action, like rabbits, or squirrels, or hiking for Couse. Sitting will bore them to death though.

I hunted in NC out of a ground blind with them, and let them bring a little game, like connect 4 or a coloring book if I wanted to stay more than an hour. It took me a while to learn that they can't sit still, and they can't be quiet. It's not possible, and they can't help it. So don't get upset at them, they really can't.

I found morning hunts were better for them. Just be prepared, they will tell everyone if you miss... : ) but that's just part of the fun.

My boys both hunted as soon as they could hold a bow, or BB gun. I started them with a little buck BB gun, then a red rider, then a Gamo kids sized pellet rifle when he was 5, but the cricket is a good one too. I just figured a Gamo would not hurt me as much if he shot me by accident and he couldn't cock it by himself to shoot again. The bows are the same, I started them both on black Rhino bows, made for kids, they are great. Now my 8 year old has a bear Oddyssey and LOVES it. More than his gamo, well, maybe not more, but he loves it.

I say, if they want to go, take them. Just make sure you don't get upset when they want to head home. Just tell them it was a good day hunting and you were glad they went with you.
