Big Buck found...

Recommended Posts

Larry,

Great bucks are hard to find but I would try to help your friends out if they are deserving of the buck and see how their hunts go. You never know if he'll stay in the same area or if they are able to close the deal. I believe that each gets what they have coming to them and I'm sure it will work out for you. Congrats on finding such a nice buck and good luck on getting him on the ground whether it's your tag or your friend's.

I would help a friend tag...

Especially a lets say 24 year old, who just bought a house, just started a new career and doesnt have too much time to hunt... Frequents this site, shoots a 257 wby, uses Leica's and whom you have shot with numerous times as well as coyote hunted....

I'm not sure i know someone like that...anymore details?

He cant seem to keep his truck out of the shop, he has worked for YOUR company....

Oh, that guy. Never know it could happen.

So here's the situation...

[*]There's three hunts in the unit before December

[*]Due to the water situation it's unlikely he will go too far

Heck my hunt has 5 hunts before the dec. hunt and I would still try to get a friendon a buck like that. and as far as the water goes that will likely change real soon when we start gettin our fall rains. Happy hunting :P

That buck could be anywhere once the rut starts, you may never find him during the rut. If he's that big, good chance that he will live through the hunts. It's up to you, but I would only consider it for a very close, longtime, trustworthy friendship.

You never know he might survive the season try to wait it out to see if you get him or just tell your buddy. If you think you are the only one who knows about this big buck you thought wrong it is most certain that a couple of guys are going after that sucker right when the season starts. Goodluck.

I say help your bud out. If anything, You will learn the pattern of this buck while helping your bud hunt him. Just in case he doesn't take him? But what a big stoke if you put him on it ..People get paid to do that..

By the road? I've seen single tracks called a road. If he's big that's where he would be.. I guess.

How big again?

Good luck

Just because he's near a road doesn't mean he won't still be there come December. That said, help a friend, HUNT THAT DEER and if you help someone else get a crack at him, you'll feel a sense of accomplishment. If not, you'll know where NOT to waste your time with that cherished Dec. tag.

Scoutm',

Keep him for yourself! Don't tell a friend! Are you kidding me. You want to walk into his house and look at your deer hanging on his wall. Do you think your buds are going to show you any appreciation. heck no. In a few years the story will change completely. Your role in the harvesting of that monster will diminish with every passing year. It will be like, " Oh yea Scout'm, were you there when I shot ole Mossy Horn. Maybe someday you will be as good a hunter as me." In addition every year a different friend will want the same treatment," You got Billy a big buck now it is my turn." Don't be everyones' "B----", besides the best Coues Hunters have no friends.

I like that one

Good point about the story changing from year to year LOL

I can think of about 20 hunting stories that have changed with my friends and family

This has been interesting seeing where this has gone...

Here's a few answers to questions that were asked:

  • He's Big - not HUGE - I watched him in my scope for two hours and I put him at around 105" others have said smaller but then it's hard to judge from prictures.
  • When I said he was by the road - it is a road that any two wheel drive truck could drive down without any problems - if you didn't care too much about your car a car could make it as well.
  • I would much prefer to see a friend tag the deer than a stranger and I have no fear that time would remove me from the story - If your hunt buddies are like that I would suggest getting new ones - sharing with your buddies is 90% of the hunting fun.
  • I completely agree bucks don't get big by being dumb so there's a good chance he will live another year and if we get rain soon I would expect him to move to a more remote area.
The pictures are not the best so you really have to look hard to see the length on his seconds. It's also hard to tell but he is fairly wide being just inside his ears. The way his tine curve make them look shorter than they are.

Tell me what you think...

No broken points - it just curves in such a way that it looks like it's broken.

I have a little different feeling on this. I like to FIND and kill my own bucks. The whole process of paper scouting for new areas, then actually going into the area, and finally finding and photographing a shooter buck is as much fun if not more fun for me than actually killing the big buck which is all you do if someone else takes you to a buck that they have scouted. I have had friends point me to an area where I have found a good buck which I was very appreciative about but I have never killed a buck that someone else scouted for me. I would rather not know where my friends/hunting partners find good bucks. My friends/hunting partners feel the same way. So to answer your question from my perspective, I would tell my friends to "find their own buck" and they would probably say "I didn't want your buck anyway." Nice buck by the way!
